Shariff Kabunsuan's century

[edit]

When I heard about the creation of Shariff Kabunsuan province, I started to search for more information for my own "Statoids" website. This is what I found regarding the date of Shariff Kabunsuan's arrival in Mindanao. The stories are arranged according to the date they give.

  • Maguindanao, in an article that is no longer current, says, "Named after an Arab-Malay preacher who introduced Islam to Central Mindanao in the 14th century, Shariff Kabunsuan, whose creation was authored by the 24-seat Regional Assembly in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), will cover all of the 10 towns in the first district of Maguindanao."
  • The INQ7.net news site says, "The new province was named after an Arab-Malay Islamic preacher who introduced Islam in Central Mindanao in the 14th century." A lot of other news sites have exactly the same sentence.
  • Manobo says, "In the 14th century, Sharif Kabungsuan, a muslim missionary, arrived from Johore, to convert the people."
  • This Philippines Local Government page says, "Dating back to the 15th century, Shariff Mohammad Kabungsuan, an Arab Malay missionary first set foot in this place, bringing with him with seal and ardor his Islam Faith to the natives who later embraced Islam."
  • Bangsamoro says, "Total Islamization of the whole Pulangi area succeeded only with the arrival of Sharif Kabungsuan a prince from Johore who came to Mindanao after the fall of Malacca and nearby areas to Dutch colonialists in 1511."
  • Islamic World says, "In Mindanao, Sharif Muhammad Kabungsuan, also claiming to be of Hashimite descent, is credited as being mostly instrumental in the propagation of the new faith in the island. He landed first at Malabang (now in Lanao del Sur) in the year 1515 and subsequently proceeded to Cotabato, where he firmly planted the seed of the new creed." The exact same sentences are also on the Bangsamoro site.
  • This Word document says "However, historian Cesar Majul gives the credit for bringing Islam to Sharif Kabungsuan in 1515."
  • Reuters AlertNet says, "1515 - Sharif Kabunsuan arrives in Mindanao and later founds the Maguindanao sultanate."
  • A United States Institute of Peace report says, "The first sultan of Sulu came to power around 1450; Sharif Kabunsuan, who founded the Maguindanao sultanate, came to Mindanao around 1515."
  • A travel site says, "Its history dates back to the 16th century when Shariff Kabunsuan, an Arab missionary from Johore, landed along the banks of the Masla Pulangi now known as Rio Grande de Mindanao."

All of the most specific statements point to about 1515, which was in the 16th century. I don't know anything about this subject except what I picked up from the Internet, but I would conclude that 16th century is correct.
