Inclusion of History?
[edit]I've been following up on entries about Kurmitola's (and Shamshernagar Airfield) history as a World War II air base for the Flying Tigers for operations Over the Hump, taking fuel and supplies to Kunming, China from India. For instance, see Charles Woods. There are a few third party website that talks quite descriptively about the use of Kurmitola and Shamshernagar as US Army Air Corps bases. There's a 3rd party website with black and white photos of aircraft at Kurmitola too afaik. I am pretty convinced that Kurmitola refers specifically to present day Zia Int'l Airport, while the predominant airport for Dhaka was otherwise Tejgaon airport till 1981
Similarly (but not sure if this is the right place to discuss it), Feni Airfield (now abandoned) was used by the Royal Air Force / British Army as a base too for separate South-east Asia operations.

Name Change
[edit]Please discuss the possible name change here before moving the article. As it is, a name such as "Hazrat Shahjalal (R) International Airport" seems rather implausible. Thanks, Jasepl (talk) 03:51, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
- While unfortunate, the name change is actually a decision by the current Government of Bangladesh.[1] The full name probably won't have the (R) part (i.e., the name will prob. be Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport). However, I think we can wait till the name is officially changed (i.e. in terms of signs, documents, as well as IATA codes) to the new name. For the time being, we can simply mention the name change. --Ragib (talk) 03:55, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I know nothing about Bangladesh politics, so I won't comment on that. However, I do agree that we need to wait until the proposal becomes reality and the name is officially changed. And yes, inclusion of the "(R)" made it seem rather implausible to me. Thanks, Jasepl (talk) 03:59, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
- Ragib, you dont need to provide us with your opinion on whether its fortunate or unfortunate. For many Zia is a legendary president, but as his role comes increasingly under scrutiny, especially for his complacency in the events of August 15, many do feel that its wrong to have our premier international airport named after our country's first military dictator. My point simply is, you being a veteran in Wikipedia, should really know better before casting forth an opinion like that.--122.144.10.15 (talk) 10:31, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
- The (R) part is short for Radiallahu ta'ala anhu, i.e., a phrase of praise about the saint. When mentioning the saint Shahjalal's name some people use this phrase. I'm curious whether this will be a part of the official name, since including it makes the name quite awkward sounding to an outsider. Let's wait for the new signboard ... :) --Ragib (talk) 04:03, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
- I agree also. Until we see the official unveiling, we should stick with "Zia". My personal view is the name will be "Shah Jalal International Airport" (without the honorifics) just as Chittagong was changed to Shah Amanat International Airport. → AA (talk) — 10:19, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

- According to [2], the Daily Star, the name change has been finalized. So it is redundant to keep the old name. Canadian (talk) 16:19, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
According to [3], Government wanted to change names of all institutions named after Ziaur Rahman. I think it was a deliberate attempt to insult Ziaur Rahman and his supporters (nearly 40% of the population when name changing was done) by a vindictive government. The reasoning for name changing was controversial and thus it should have been mentioned in this article for objectivity, neutrality and completeness. According to [4] this renaming would cost Taka 1400 crore - which was not mentioned in this article. I added this information in October, 2010 but my contribution was deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Midasmilton (talk • contribs) 12:15, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Shahjalal or Shah Jalal
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

Shahjalal International Airport → Shah Jalal International Airport —
- Please sort out disputed move. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:57, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- Dear Wikitanvir, Shah Amanat Airport is spelled with the 'Shah'being a separate word, I think Shah Jalal should be spelled like the aforementioned method instead of one word. Canadian (talk) 16:27, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- (According to the link or reference here) There is no space between those two words in the official name. Though they exist in the name of that saint. So, I moved them as one single word. Tanvir 16:36, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- I think they translated the Bangla word and how we pronounce it. Look up any 'shah' anywhere and you will see that it is more like a title, instead of part of a name. Ex: Shah Alam, Shah Abbas I. Shah is like a 'van' in Dutch names. Canadian (talk) 16:39, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- I agree, and I ain't saying that it's wrong, but according to the reference we got, it is a single word. About Shah Amanat, I can say officially it's "Shah Amanat" (1). Bangladeshi websites are not going to update it too fast. So I think we need to wait for that update. Then we can go back to the "Shah Jalal", if they say so. What say you? Tanvir 16:51, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- Some more references that it is a single word (The Daily Independent, BDnews24) Tanvir 16:57, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- Then why is Shah Amanat International Airport, spelled that way? Canadian (talk) 17:00, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- Because of this official link, the name is spelled like Shah Amanat. I already said. :) Tanvir 17:13, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- Please see your own statements above (admitting that nothing is finalised). Also see the input from half a dozen editors, all agreeing to retain the name until the actual new one is known. Jasepl (talk) 17:46, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- But the name has been officially changed... haven't you read any of the links[5]. All they have to do now is change the signboards at the airports and change the website and we all know now inefficient the Bangladesh government websites are. Canadian (talk) 17:52, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- I have seen plenty of links and sourced that say, yes, a decision to change the name has been taken. As to what the new name is, well, do you know? Shah Jalal? Shahjalal? Shah Jalal (R)?
- I have no clue of anything to do with Bangladesh. But I do know that nothing certain has emerged out of any of the cited sources. Your own discussion above shows the same thing. So does your comment: "more or less final."
- Bottom line is that no one seems to know what exactly the new name is. And half a dozen editors have agreed to leave things be until that is known. What is the problem with that? Jasepl (talk) 17:57, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- We all know how to spell the name is Bangladesh's native language Bengali which is শাহজালাল আন্তর্জাতিক বিমানবন্দর, but are discussing the name in English. The naming itself is very minor, we are just discussing whether or not a space should be included [6]. Jasepl, please look at link #4 and I hope this will clear any misconceptions you might have. Canadian (talk) 18:00, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- The Bengali name transcribes as "śāhajālāl āntarjātik bimānabandar". Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:57, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

- Yes, nothing is final, but we must take the official name (maybe it's not well-known now), as it is announced. I stated above that we need to wait to get the official name in their website, because it will take time to update. But I have already cited some references. See again, The Daily Independent, BDnews24, The Daily Star. All are notable Bangladeshi newspaper, and I think we can trust on them. Our present concern is just a space, and these links show us the spelling of that airport as well. Tanvir 02:07, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- The new sign took place last night. Now it is Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (here). As of signboard, there is "Hazrat" with the new name, but it's still Shahjalal in the newspapers. So, I think we can wait for the update of Bangldesh Civil Aviation's website. Regards, Tanvir 10:20, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- My point exactly: there's still uncertainty as to what exactly the name is. To Hazrat? Or no not Haztar? (R) or no (R)? Space? No space? Each of these - trivial as they may seem - do make a difference. What is the desperate hurry to make a premature change?
- Besides, Wikipedia's basic editing tenets include facts and consensus, neither of which are present here. Jasepl (talk) 10:50, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- Folks, there is little point in arguing about this move and also there is no need to rush. Tanvir, you need to discuss your proposals and present evidence to editors to arrive at a consensus particularly when the previous consensus was to keep the existing name until such time as there was no ambiguity on what the name should be. However, given that the rename has taken place, I would say again that let's leave it as it is for the moment until we see the name spelled out in English in official literature. Bangladeshi newspapers are not the most reliable of institutions to get the english correct and as we have seen since the official announcement, the name they have used has changed many times. → AA (talk) — 11:04, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- I am about to clear few things. First, It will not be Zia International Airport, because officially the name and signboard has already changed. Secondly, Will the "Hazrat" or "(R)" exist with the name or not?, Thirdly, Will it be "Shahjalal" or "Shah Jalal"? I think, all of you will agree with me, that these are the issues we need to discuss about. Now, I don't have a hurry to change the title with Shah jalal or Hazrat or (R), but I had a hurry to change it to the Shahjalal International Airport from Zia International Airport (though that wasn't made by me). And I still believe that was obvious.
- Actually, we don't need to discuss anything at the moment - that is what the consensus was. We just need to wait to see what the official English language use is by external sources (not Bangladeshi media who are in the same quandry as us when it comes to defining the English translation) and there was no need to "hurry" to change the title - the article isn't going anywhere. Wikipedia is not driven by the same political motives as the Bangladesh government. If anything, it could do with cleanup and expansion. → AA (talk) — 12:50, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- AA, I made edits (my move) with reliable references only, and I respect consensus. The date when the consensus was made in last discussion is Feb 16, 2010. That was just after one day when the rename was passed in the cabinet. Then the article was moved to "Shah Jalal International Airport" in Feb 22. Since there was no reference that it can be "Shah Jalal", so I moved it with "Shahjalal", and that was my only move. After that move, I'm just taking part in the discussion. Regards, Tanvir 11:54, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- It would've been better to take part in discussions first and then made your move :) As you observed there was consensus, it was not correct that you should go against it and rename the article. I had considered moving it back but did not want to go into an edit war and do appreciate that we're all trying to improve the article. But for future reference please review the policy on consensus to understand how it works. Just because there has been no discussion for a week does not alter the fact there was a consensus not to move the article regardless of whatever reference is available. → AA (talk) — 12:46, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- As you observed there was consensus, it was not correct that you should go against it and rename the article. Please consider that, I didn't move the article from Zia International Airport to Shah Jalal International Airport (see here). I just fixed a space (nothing more), which was redundant according to the references mentioned above. You made a good decision not to take part in edit war. I'm not blaming anyone, and I strongly believe that Canadian also made a good decision to move the article to Shahjalal International Airport. The name of the airport has officially changed. Why shouldn't we update that? Tanvir 16:23, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- Its official! The sign was changed yesterday [7]. The spelling is Shahjalal. Canadian (talk) 14:16, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- And how does that affect the process of consensus on Wikipedia? As a veteran editor, you should understand the importance of the talk page :) → AA (talk) — 14:22, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- But Canadian, you said above that the signboard includes the word "Hazrat"? So why are you leaving that word out of the article name? And why are you and wikitanvir bent on a mad rush to change the article name in the first place, when it is evident to all that no one knows what the actual name is? Hell, you two have been arguing about that amongst yourselves! And AA is right: consensus comes before an edit, not the other way around. Jasepl (talk) 14:53, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- I never said anything about "Hazrat." I always sign my comments. None of the newspapers in Bangladesh have stated that there is a "Hazrat." There is no "Hazrat" in the airport in Chittagong also. And to Jasepl, Wikipedia is a place where we stay up-to-date. when all the major newspapers of the country state that the name has been changed and when the signboards have been changed already [8], then it is more than correct to re-edit the article in Wiki. Canadian (talk) 15:01, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- Jespel, We (me and Canadian) had a rush to change the article title to Shahjalal, as it is now. Whatever you say, that is the official name. So, it should not be Zia. This article discuss about current issues, so the information can change rapidly. We need to up-to-date with information come from reliable sources. One or two Bangladeshi newspapers may not considered as reliable, but when everyone say the same thing, I think we can trust on that news. Tanvir 16:23, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- The signboard says, "Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport" so based on your logic that should be the name of the article, right? → AA (talk) — 15:21, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- None of the newspapers in Bangladesh have stated that there is a "Hazrat." Maybe you ought to recheck those sources that Tanvir's posted above. → AA (talk) — 15:25, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- If that's what the signboard says, then that is the name of the airport. Canadian (talk) 15:26, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- I hope you see the fallacy of your arguments. The whole point of the consensus was to wait until sources not of Bangladeshi origin refer to the airport by its new name but I would not advocate changing the name again to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport until we see some other evidence. → AA (talk) — 15:30, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- Anyways there is a full name and there is a short name, no one called the former president of the USA, George Walker Bush, But George Bush, or simply Bush. The honorific or such many times does not really matter. You will understand that the main point is that name has been changed to Shahjalal International, and it is not Zia anymore, whether or not it is Hazrat Shahjalal, Shah Jalal or Shahjalal, it really does not matter. You will learn that even to this day we do not know the 'corret' spelling of the leader of Libya's Gaddafi's name[9]. Many newspapers spell it with a "Q" and others with a "G." Both "Q" and "G" convey the exact same message. Just use your common sense. Canadian (talk) 15:26, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- Your comment is bordering on incivility. The point is you went against consensus without discussing the changes and made arguments that are unfounded. Consensus is what determines whether you name the article George Bush or George Walker Bush or George W Bush and you only achieve that through discussions but let's leave it for the moment - we may be back again (as we were going to do) once we see the usage in non-Bangladeshi media. → AA (talk) — 15:54, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- How are you so sure that foreign sources will get the spelling correct? They are still unsure how to spell Qaddafi's name. The bottom line is that the spelling is very minor. Think for yourself, for example who cares whether a person is Sara or Sarah or even Serra; the message is that she is not Kate. Another example will be "colour" and "color," they give the same message. But I agree with you, on the time being, it is better to wait and see which spelling ultimately prevails. Canadian (talk) 16:10, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- It's not about what is correct but what is most widely used and what the consensus here is. That is all that matters. → AA (talk) — 16:16, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

- As AA explained, the underlying principle of place names on Wikipedia is commonality of usage in a particular language. That is why Peking changed to Beijing (because a majority of English speakers started using the newer term), but remains Pékin in French, Peking in Hungarian and Pechino in Italian etc. Whilst not completely comparable with an airport's name, the principle is the same: identify what the official English language transliteration is and only then make a significant change such as this one. Of course, one needs to know what the official Bengali name is first - which remains anyone's guess at this point.
- The fact remains that Shahjalal International Airport is possibly incorrect (as we will doubtless find out one way or the other in the near future). Zia International Airport, on the other hand, is not the wrong name; it may be simply outdated, that's all. There is a significant difference between incorrect and outdated.
- Based on all the "evidence" provided by Canadian and Tanvir, I have eight different possible new names for this airport:
- Shahjajal International Airport
- Shah Jalal International Airport
- Hazrat Shahjajal International Airport
- Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport
- Shahjalal (R) International Airport
- Hazrat Shahjalal (R) International Airport
- Shah Jalal (R) International Airport
- Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) International Airport
- Which one is it? Do you know? Does anyone? How? Based on what?
- Based on all the "evidence" provided by Canadian and Tanvir, I have eight different possible new names for this airport:
- And yes, every little difference, no matter how insignificant it may seem, does indeed matter. George W Bush / George Bush / George Walker Bush / W / Dubya / Dumbya might all refer to the same person, but the name he chooses to go by is George W Bush and that is what the article is titled.
- Please also note, for future reference, that one makes a change after facts are known and after consensus has been obtained. To go ahead and make a change and then say "let's wait" is pointless and disruptive. Thanks, Jasepl (talk) 03:33, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
- Why can't you understand that Zia International Airport is absolutely wrong now. It is the past, so please, stick with the present. And I admit that Shahjalal International Airport can be partially wrong. But its the space or Hazrat or (R) that matters, not the name. They are just part of that name. So, I said "let's wait", and It is not pointless or disruptive. Absolutely wrong is not better than partial wrong. Thanks. Tanvir 04:12, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
- So taking one wrong and replacing it with another wrong, somehow makes the second wrong right? Jasepl (talk) 07:01, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
- It isn't wrong now, and it wasn't right what it was in few days ago. Tanvir 14:46, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
- If I wasn't assuming good faith, I'd be inclined to think Bangladeshi politics is what is driving this push on Wikepedia itself but Wikipedia has no place for politics and consensus is what matters. I suggest again that you folks read-up on the policy for future reference. → AA (talk) — 09:30, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your faith and suggestion.
- Now, what is your point? Going back to Zia, or Shah Jalal (as it is proposed in requested moves), or just wait for consensus....? I don't know what you think, but gaining a consensus is also my target. That's why I talk, not just for arguing. Tanvir 14:46, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
- Someone suggest that we wait and see what the international media uses. They seem to be using Shahjalal International Airport instead of using the space in between and also they are omitting the "Hazrat." Here are the links: [10][11]. Canadian (talk) 20:12, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
- Bangladesh Civil Aviation website has updated the new name. It is Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (see here). But according to the national and international media coverages shown above, I think present article title is more familiar, so we can use it. Regards, Tanvir 10:35, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- I agree that we should stick with current title. → AA (talk) — 10:55, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- Actually Hazrat is a title, not a part of the real name of that saint. Maybe they used it from religious aspect. Tanvir 12:24, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- It is a title and it's ironic that CAAB haven't prefixed the other airport names with "Hazrat". → AA (talk) — 12:47, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Zia International Airport renamed to Shahjalal International Airport
[edit]I read in the online newspaper few months ago that the Government of Bangladesh has made the name change of the airport as noted in the subject line of this message. It would be great if widipedia reflects such changes in all the documents it serves.
- Official name is Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, thats how major reservations systems like Amadeus are showing it as well, I think title should be changed to the full one, as for the archived discussion on the subject, one user has stated that "Hazrat" is just a title, well so is "Sri" and Amritsar Raja Sansi Airport has just been renamed as Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, please note here "Jee" is a title too, and wikipedia is incorporating the whole name as article title they are not ditching Sri nor the unecessary Jee bit either, If international media start referring to it as Guru Ram Dass Int'l Airport or just Ram Dass Int'l Airport will you change it to that?. How some international sources incorrectly address Dhaka airport should not influence wikipedia, its how Bangladesh has named it officially that counts.119.155.46.15 (talk) 19:01, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
- Shah Jalal are two seprate words.116.71.24.120 (talk) 15:38, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Bahrain Air - is no longer serving Dhaka China Southern - does not fly to Shanghai (Guangzhou is active)
Air China Cargo - now provides service from Beijing to Dhaka via Chengdu.
I am an aviation enthusiast (planemannyc is my forum name in Airliners.net and the Skyscrapercity forum on Bangladeshi aviation). I am not an over-enthusiast, so I will not put in information that is not based on published reports (and will cite published reports where possible).
I would also like to set up an area on the page for airlines that previously served DAC -
British Airways (and BOAC) Interflug KLM Aeroflot Sri Lankan Air Asia Iran Air Iraqi Airways Afriqiyah Airways Indian Airlines GMG Airlines Air Parabat AeroBengal Best Aviation Burma Airways Oman Air Royal Nepal Airlines Cosmic Air

[edit]I find it ridiculous how ArmanJ (talk · contribs) changed the article name to Shah Jalal International Airport, without any proper reason, and most importantly not discussing about it on the talk page. Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh refers to it as Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

- "Hazrat Shah Jalal" is what is written on the English signboards at the airport.--ArmanJ (talk) 15:23, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
- And, the name of the Sufi saint after which the airport is named is Shah Jalal.--ArmanJ (talk) 15:29, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
- I have listed the official website. Where do you see "Shah Jalal"? This is not about the saint, its about the official name of the airport. — 114.130.8.137 (talk) 15:31, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
- Get a Bangladeshi third party here then, everyone in Dhaka must have seen what's written on the airport itself.--ArmanJ (talk) 15:34, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
- I moved the page back to its original title. Mr. ArmanJ, please do not move a title without discussing about it on the talk page. Thanks! --Ahnaaf (talk) 15:51, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Page name should be "Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport" instead of "Shahjalal International Airport"
[edit]As per the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, a govt. agency of Bangladesh the current name of Dhaka's airport is Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. So, I think page title should be Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport instead of Shahjalal International Airport.

Shahjalal International Airport → Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport – I can't find any sources which refer to the airport without the prefix "Hazrat". Accordingly, it should be added to the article title. AMomen88 (talk) 23:32, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
- Support per WP:COMMONNAME; the first 7-8 pages of Google news search results refer to the airport as "Hazrat Shahjalal" without exception. Also, although I'm definitely not a subject matter expert, my understanding is that "Hazrat" is an honorific religious title, so it makes sense for it to always be included.
