Problem with the text

[edit]

I'd do it myself but frankly I'm not sure what this article is trying to say in the first place. It doesn't strike me as worthy of deletion, as there does seem to be content there. --Deville (Talk) 04:13, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Apart from the semi-mythical bird (it seems to be based on an actual animal, but I have not tried to see whether it's possible to tie it down to an actual species) which apparently was in ancient times trained for carrying messages, it's also a not uncommon name in Iran and Pakistan and it was the name of the last Shah's personal jetliner: [1]. But we seem to need an editor who known Persian, I cannot make anything of what Google finds. Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 08:53, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not mythical, used in falconry

[edit]

This edit on December 27, 2009 removed the old text, links, and categories. In order that the necessary changes be performed in a proper manner, I am reinstating the original version and pasting the new text here instead. The edit summary was "The Shahbaz is not a mythical bird but is one which is truly used in falconry in Persia, Afghanistan, ...".

The Shahbaz, or hawk-king, a large grey goshawk with yellow eyes, caught in the hills of A%hanistan and its surrounding regions, brought down to the plains and sold. The tiercelet or male, is, as usual, much smaller than the female, and is called Jurrah, in Persian "the active." Both are uncommonly strong and fero- cious. They are accounted the noblest birds in the sport of falconry.
