Spelling of name?

[edit]
Obviously name given on road signboard is correct and pronounced that way. There are attempts made to translate Devanagari in english but unforunately no success. There is no translator software. people spell devanagari words in english the way they like. Personally, I will type 'Shahada' as 'Shahaada' if it is in lyrics of some song. It seems you can read Devanagari. Then you should take look how devanagari waords are spelled in english on internet. It is total mess. For example, take a look at these lyris of sad song from Tere naam...

mar ke bhi na vaadaa apnaa toDenge ik dooje kaa saath kabhi na chhoDenge apnaa to sadiyoN janmoN kaa naataa hai jaan se jaan ko kaun judaa kar paataa hai tere sivaa, tere sivaa tere sivaa is dariyaa kaa nahin koi kinaaraa sanam ho.., nahin koi kinaaraa sanam tere naam ham ne kiyaa hai, jeevan apnaa saaraa sanam ho.., jeevan apnaa saaraa sanam

Many people will take objection that in 'vaadaa', two 'a' after 'd' are not necessary and it should be spelled as 'vaada'. At the same time, if someone spell it as 'vada', then it becomes laughable because 'vaada' means 'promise' and 'vada' means a cheap fast food people eat on roadside stalls.

BTW, what makes you name of this town interesting?

  • That it has nearly the same name as the piece of Arabic text, is likely to cause people to want to find out why. The statement that "name given on road signboard is correct" seems to depend on the spelling ability of the man who painted the sign (one vertical stroke rather than two adjacent): here in England there are plenty of English-language signs with spelling errors. When people who live at or near Shahada town pronounce the name, how do they pronounce the first "a"? From what I have read, Hindi short "a" is pronounced like English "u" in "hut", and Hindi long "a" is pronounced like English "a" in "father". • If the person painting that signboard has done mistake, then thousands of people in this town and Maharashtra has done same mistake million times while writing and billion times while pronouncing. I can upload many pics. It is just coincidence that name of this town matches with arabic text. Such coincidences happens. In sanskrit Ramayan Rama is spelled as Raamah. Give google search Raamah site:valmikiramayan.net. Raamah is son of Cush in Bible and in Ramayana Kush is son of Rama. I recall the quote from movie Signs - Is it possible that there are no coincidences?. Such coincidences happens. What else I can say. Raama (talk) 10:47, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks. If all the signs have the first 'a' short, then that spelling seems to be correct. Thanks. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 21:40, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
