[edit]Should there be a note that the office was vacant during the period 2nd May 1997 - after the 1997 election - until the formation of William Hague's Shadow Cabinet on 19th June 1997. The Shadow Cabinet of John Major existed during this time, but consisted of the ex-cabinet members, excluding those who had lost their seats. Usually Major took the offices of the defeated ministers, but this does not seem to have happened with Chief Secretary portfolio which had been held by William Waldegrave who lost his seat.
