Yenta
[edit]'Yenta' is a Yiddish woman's name. It has been charactured as a type of female busybody or neuveau-riche. As an example:
A mink died and went to heaven. He was told he could have anything he wished. "In that case, I want a coat made out of the skins of yentas."
It is not a word that means 'matchmaker'. That interpretation comes from the character 'Yenta' in Fiddler On The Roof, who is a matchmaker, and, as matchmakers often are, a busybody. Too Old (talk) 01:31, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Shidduch was started 2004 by JFDwolff, size=3,744 = a good size article, not just a stub. Shadchan started 2007 @ 203 bytes, seems to have remained a stub that reminds us that a Shadchan is not a Yenta. At present Shadchan's only purposes seem to be:
- remind us that a Shadchan is not a Yenta - without even telling us how the confusion began in 1964 with Yentel the Jewish Matchmaker in Fiddler on the roof.
