Source in contradiction with another and possibly with itself
[edit]Article states Antao was the 1964 flag bearer with a citation. That source indeed states When Kenya became an independent nation in 1963, Antao became the first flag bearer when the team went to the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
However before that, the same source in a section above states The next hurdle was the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo where he was the flagbearer for the Kenyan team. Unfortunately, he fell ill just before his event and had to retire. That is when, handing over the flag to his compatriot Kipchoge Keino who was ruling the world at that time, Antao decided that the time was ripe for his retirement from competitive running having given eight years of his life to it.
Now the phrase "handing over the flag to his compatriot" could perhaps be interpreted as symbolically to mean stepping down and allowing another person to carry on in the same field...except, for a couple things. Usually this is expressed as "passing the torch". Personally I don't recall ever hearing "handing over the flag" used that way.
More importantly though is what the Olympic source Sports Reference/Olympedia says about it. Antao is listed as the 1964 flagbearer according to the now defunct Olympic site within Sports Reference.[1] The new, updated Olympic site by the same individuals, now lists Kip Keino.[2][3] --DB1729talk 15:13, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
...update. Recent edits have indirectly resolved the ambiguity with the addition of this source which states: "...all was not well with him (Antao). He feared he would not be able to run at all. Disappointed, he handed the Kenya flag which he was due to carry at the lead of the Kenya team into the stadium to his friend, the great Kipchoge Keino.
"
I am correcting this page now accordingly. --DB1729talk 21:16, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. I had meant to come back to this and clarify, hoping to find another source, but this is fine. Thanks for updating. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 06:54, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
