A paper worth referencing: Inkpen,S.A. and Doolittle,W.F. (2016) Molecular Phylogenetics and the Perennial Problem of Homology. J. Mol. Evol., 1–9. T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 05:36, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Percent homology is not a misnomer

[edit]

The article says that percent homology is a misnomer because a sequence is either homologous or not. I think that is incorrect. If a sequence forms the basis of two species, but there are small mutations in each, then the sequence consists of many shorter homologous subsequences separated by mutations. The percentage of the longer sequence that is made of homologous subsequences can validly be described as the percentage of homology.

However, I am not a biologist and so do not want to edit the page. Could someone more knowledgeable please fix this? If not, I'll "be bold" and make a go of it myself. LachlanA (talk) 00:01, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
