Seng Khasi is a socio cultural organisation formed on November 23rd 1899 by sixteen Khasi men to protect and preserve the Khasi way of life and worship. It has no links to the Khasi Students Union which was formed in 1977 and does not involve itself in political matters. It is strictly dedicated to uplifting and creating awareness regarding the Khasi religion and the culture and traditions that are deeply bound to it.

The Seng Khasi are highly respected and universally acknowledged as custodians of Khasi culture and religion - Niam Khasi.

Over the years Seng Khasi has gained momentum and instilled great pride in the Khasis for their culture. The Seng Khasi are proud to be one of the oldest organisations in the country who has persevered and endured through all the challenges that colonialism and western beliefs have brought upon the Khasi people.

The organisation will celebrate 125 years next year. Every year more than 300 branches of Seng Khasi organise the religious festival “ Ka Shad Suk Mynsiem” (Dance of Peaceful Hearts) across the Khasi Hills. Another of its greatest contributions to the Khasi people and to the country is the revival of the annual pilgrimage to the sacred peak, U Lum Sohpetbneng, which translates as “Navel of the Heavens”. This pilgrimage is known as “Kiew Pyneh Rngiew sha U Sohpetbneng “. It is believed by the Khasis that mankind descended from the celestial realm of the Gods atop this sacred peak, through a golden vine, Ka Jingkieng Ksiar. Every year in the first Sunday of February, more than a lakh devotees climb to summit to partake in the ceremony and rituals organised by Seng Khasi and also to offer their own prayers to the Almighty at the Centre of the Universe, U Sohpetbneng.
