For general information purposes a Back-up Alert Force BAF ("team" sometimes used instead of "force") aboard a DEG (destroyer escort guided with the "guided indicating the presence of a guided missile system as part of the armament) in 1975 included lower-ranked personnel issued axe handles to be used as clubs to be used against those attempting to board the ship. The axe handle wielders went to the weather deck (any ship surface exposed to the elements) and took cover while those with firearms were the main repellers if that weapon-type was required. The club-wielders were likely present to allow non-lethal force if the situation called for that type of response. This information is based upon my observations and participation in a BAF. We trained regularly and I remember 3 times when we were called upon to perform these duties for real, rather then mere training, during a WesPac (Western Pacific) deployment.
