The Seamount League was established at some time prior to the mid-1970s. It was already in existence in 1975 when I attended member school Peninsula High School of Gig Harbor. At that time, it also included Curtis High School of Tacoma. I can remember other members in the late '70s being Fife, Evergreen, Mt. Si, and Enumclaw. Yes sir Rick! Then my school Liberty of Issaquah joined in 1978, and then from I believe 1981 until 1991 the league was comprised of Liberty, Tahoma, Mt Si, Enumclaw, Mt Rainier, and Tyee High Schools. With Liberty winning the AA State football championship in 1988, fielding one of the most dominant teams of that era, let alone ever, going 13-0...Defeating a very talented and well coached 12-0 Cheney team 31-0. An interesting side note...That Cheney squad won the title the following year. So to claim that the 1988 Liberty team was one of the greatest ever in Washington State high School football history is not a stretch at all. We fielded a All State Tailback in Aron Armstrong who ran for 2300 yards and 31 TD'S, not to mention an All State Quarterback in Darrin Newton who passed for over 3000 yards and 29 TD'S & only 4 INT's. An outstanding receiving corps (that included yours truly) and most importantly for a championship team in football at any level, a defense that was completely DOMINANT, putting up seven shutouts, including one in the championship game against a Cheney team that had TWO 1000+ yard rushers. So in short, being the AA champs in 88, I can safely say we could have handled the AAA champ that year, The Ingrham Rams. Sorry for going off on a tangent, but I was always very proud of the "88 Seamount League Champs" patch on my LHS Letterman's jacket. I can say the Seamount League was very tough, Enumclaw, and Tahoma were our, HATED, BITTER RIVALS, especially Tahoma, when we were sophomores, running up the score, well in 88 we returned the favor 35-0, scoring all in the first half, being classy and playing JV THE WHOLE SECOND HALF, our coach the great Tom Ingles, was to classy to run up the score, unlike the Tahoma coach two years prior, I would have run through a wall for that man (Ingles), anyway gosh getting old sucks, I am now 52, I can't believe it has now been 35 years, I would say long, but the years have coasted by.
