Seamen's Bethel, Falmouth, Cornwall, UK.
[edit]A Seamen's Bethel was constructed on the quayside in Falmouth, Cornwall, UK, in 1849. It was rebuilt in 1893. Photographs taken in 1905 and available from the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society show that this had a pulpit made from the bow of a ship in the style of that described in Moby Dick. On the web pages of the national Maritime Museum, Falmouth, UK, is a description to accompany the photograph of the preacher in the ship´s bow pulpit, including an overview of the activity of the Seamen´s Bethel. This may be found at:

The commemorative plaque on the wall of the former Bethel is shown in:

The Bethel in Falmouth has since been converted into two homes, used as private residences and holiday homes. 31.51.159.195 (talk) 12:37, 28 July 2014 (UTC) Kevin Barrett
Moby-Dick references inaccuracy
[edit]Just one thing: Father Mapple's sermon in Moby-Dick is by no means a "fire-and-brimstone" sermon. It is redemptive, playful, and compassionate to the character of Jonah. I don't know where whoever contributed this sentence got the idea that it was that sort of sermon, especially since Melville hated that kind of rhetoric, and Father Mapple's sermon was meant to be a deeply relatable passage. tl;dr Remove "fire-and-brimstone" and the corresponding link. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.20.241.225 (talk) 18:36, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
