Subject Information File relates to Sean Hayes’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers during the week of 23 to 29 April 1916, his subsequent internment until December the same year, his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA during the War of Independence and his service with the National Army during the Civil War. Sean Hayes worked as an Irish Volunteer and Sinn Fein organiser in Cork and was returned unopposed as Sinn Fein representative for West Cork in 1918 general election - subsequently returned in 1921 and 1922 elections. Claimant was imprisoned from November 1919 to February 1920, from March to May 1920 and again from April to August 1921 when he was released to attend meeting of Dáil Éireann. He joined the National Army in August 1922 and during the Civil War served as Military Governor of Newbridge Prison in County Kildare. Although claimant resigned from the Defence Forces on 7 March 1924 at the rank of Commandant he was awarded rank of Colonel for pension purposes. File includes: signed statements regarding subject's service from Pádraig Ó Caoimh, J. J. Walsh T. D., Major General Joseph Sweeney, John F. Shouldice and Major Liam Archer; handwritten notes of evidence given by claimant before the Board of Assessors, Military Service Pensions Act, 1924; reference to subject's employment as a Higher Executive Officer in the Stores Branch of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs from 1924 until his death in 1928; material relating to his wife’s successful application for a posthumous award to him of the 1916 Service Medal including handwritten note dated 16 May 1941 recording Frank Henderson's support for this claim.
