Death Valley Ranch / Scotty's Castle

[edit]

Scotty did not build this!

It was built by a Chicago millionaire Albert Johnson, as a winter holiday retreat, although he let his friend Scotty live there, and indeed in his will granted it to a religious organisation on condition that Scotty could stay there until his own death chrisboote 14:25, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up. I've moved the link down to the See also section and removed the bit about him building it. Slambo (Speak) 15:51, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Newton - Emporia Engineer Hadley R. Rossetter or H. R. Rossiter (spelling)?

[edit]

The article lists the Newton - Emporia Engineer as Hadley R. Rossetter with Signor and Balwin Locomotive Works (1906) as sources. Is the spelling of the last name correct? I do not have access to the first source. But the Baldwin Locomotive Works (1906) lists "Engineer H. Rossiter" for Newton-Emporia. Furthermore, "Heroic. Engineer's Life. Duty's Penalty. Man who hauled "Scotty's Special" Killed in Wreck. California Limited No. 3, On Santa Fe, Runs Into Open Switch With Fatal Results..." Los Angeles Times July 31, 1908, p. 16 fourth paragraph first sentence: "Engineer H. R. Rossiter is the man who hauled Walter Scott's Death Valley special through Kansas several years ago." This is a very old promotion, back from 2006 when reviewing was just replacing the GAN template with the GA one without comment [1] and last reassessed in 2008. Significant portions of the article are uncited, and the phrase "equal to $339,111 today" is likely already outdated. The article also includes an "as of 2006" statement and multiple citations to self-published railfan pages that don't meet the standards for GA. Disappointingly, even though an entire book was written about this train, it is only in the further reading section and not cited at all.
