Expanding
[edit]OK things are a little thin but it is an important genre in the history of comics and is a core topic (like comic history and comics by country) from which people can jump off into other areas. I will be working on fixing up the various comics genres but might as well start here.
First order of business is merging in science fiction graphic novel, it is basically restates the obvious and then focuses mainly on trade paperback collections of comic book series which makes it pretty redundant. The section on notable creators should be removed and any notable contributions should be mentioned in the text (I am a fan of JMS' work but he hasn't really contributed to a lot of sci-fi comics, although he is a noted sci-fi creator in other media he has largely worked on superhero comic books).
I also thought we need to rewrite and restructure the article as at the moment it reads like sci-fi comics were invented in the US and spread from there when it is more likely that developments in science fiction in general have influenced comics. For example, Buck Rogers wasn't initially a comic but Flash Gordon was developed as a comic strip version. Equally we have the heavy influence of pulp sci-fi novels and then later Star Wars. So a better approach might be:
- History - a look at the general background and the influences. Add in modern developments like web comics which don't really fit in any national breakdown.
- Regional sci-fi comics:
- US: Flash Gordon, EC, impact of Seduction of the Innocent, influence of Jack Kirby (I have a good source for this) laying the ground for current science fiction comics writers like Starlin, Giffen and Abnett.
- UK: Dan Dare, Trigan Empire, 2000 AD
- Japan: Strong links with film and then anime (I'll drop the Manga and Animae project a note - there is probably enough material for a full article)
- Europe: Don't know much about the early stuff
- Sources - we need a lot more. If anyone know any good references on the topics then drop them in.
Anything else? (Emperor (talk) 15:39, 6 April 2009 (UTC))
- Also it might be an idea to look at sub-themes (or cross genres), like military science fiction in comics, time travel, sci-fi superheroes. I'm not sure yet but will mull it over - it might be a good way of presenting the information. (Emperor (talk) 15:46, 6 April 2009 (UTC))
- I've created an History section, but there is little information to create sections by region or country. –Cattus talk 19:24, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
- I think there was no major sci-fi comics vague in Europe before the 60's, although there were exceptional forays such as Zig & Puce in the 21st Century, and Tintin's moon travel, but need to look it up. Also agree on the merge. 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 22:10, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
I agree with the merge too.--Cattus talk 22:50, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
- I've left a message at the Comics Project for more opinions on the merger.--Cattus talk 22:53, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
- Just merge it - that article is full of examples drawing on trade paperback collections of science fiction comics, not graphic novels. Prune them out and the article is unsustainable just on content grounds. Given the remit of these two articles they are just going to be replicating content making that article redundant. In fact I can't think of any comics genre that should have a separate section on graphic novels. (Emperor (talk) 17:15, 9 February 2012 (UTC))
WorldCat Genres
[edit]Hello, I'm working with OCLC, and we are algorithmically generating data about different Genres, like notable Authors, Book, Movies, Subjects, Characters and Places. We have determined that this Wikipedia page has a close affintity to our detected Genere of science-fiction-comic-books-strips-etc. It might be useful to look at [1] for more information. Thanks.
