Fridays for Future Sweden reorients to Gaza suffering

[edit]

The Guardian newspaper published an opinion piece today, authored by Greta Thunberg and three researcher/activists affiliated with FFF Sweden.[1] The linkage between the climate crisis and the suffering in Gaza by Israeli forces is presented as follows:

Advocating for climate justice fundamentally comes from a place of caring about people and their human rights. That means speaking up when people suffer, are forced to flee their homes or are killed — regardless of the cause.

From my observations, this change in focus is significant and substantial and not limited of FFF Sweden — and warrants coverage in this Wikipedia article at some future time.

I don't think there is a much of a case for covering antisemitism in the context of FFF on Wikipedia — at least, not based on what I have read and seen. But this reorientation in support for the Palestine cause is a clear theme within FFF nationally and internationally (as well as for a number of other climate activist groups and NGOs). Any thoughts perhaps? RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 09:08, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pro-Palestinian campaigning by youth climate activists

[edit]

Two backgrounders provide substantial coverage on this theme: reporting in The Guardian.[1] And in Der Spiegel international edition.[2]

Der Spiegel. Hamburg, Germany. ISSN 2195-1349. Retrieved 2023-12-05. Website edition headed: "Has Greta Thunberg betrayed the climate movement?"

This is difficult and vexed material. What is clear is that a large part of the youth climate movement now devotes considerable effort to campaigning for the Palestinian cause in Gaza. The German article also tackles the question of antisemitism, understandable in light of its Nazi history. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 21:47, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thunberg's views on Palestine should be covered at articles on her. If the wider climate movement is making demands relating to Palestine then that does fit here. (I won't pretend to understand the phrase "No climate justice on occupied land!" but I'm sure there's a source that explains it.) It is not appropriate under BLP to accuse Thunberg of antisemitism for things she has not said, as Der Spiegel does. If she says "I support Hamas" then that's another matter. — Bilorv (talk) 21:32, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The article on Thunberg does have a paragraph on her views on Palestine, search on "published an opinion piece". And the article on Luisa Neubauer covers her views on that general theme here. The German media also dig into the question of antisemitism in these contexts, but I've not seen any direct accusations in print. The matter of reorientation by substantial parts of the youth climate movement to support Palestinians in Gaza is noteworthy and may deserve coverage in this article at some future point. I am guessing that academic studies on that theme will appear in due course as well? RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 22:37, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

School Strike for ClimateFridays for Future – The naming here appears to be a bit of a head scratcher. It resembles a capitalised descriptive title, but is based on a literal transliteration of a phrase in Swedish once held up by Greta. And yet it was never the common name for the climate movement, which quickly adopted "Fridays for Future" as the WP:COMMONNAME for its international actions and campaigning. This is more than evident from Ngrams, which reveals a pretty wide gulf in respective usage. The FFF name is also now incredibly consistent in its usage by the organisation, down to the naming of its chapters, e.g. FFF Sweden, FFF Deutschland, etc., and it's also pretty descriptive, i.e. they protest on Fridays on issues related to the future. There appears to be comparatively little cause, if any, to use the current title, which rises to nothing even approaching a WP:COMMONNAME. Iskandar323 (talk) 09:36, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
