Sonderburg

[edit]

Weren't these people called Schleswig-Holstein-Glücksburg? Without the Sonderburg? Gerard von Hebel (talk) 19:21, 29 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, according to Huberty, Giraud and Magdelaine's L'Allemagne Dynastique, Tome VII Oldenbourg, 1994, pages 46, 83, 122, 168, from the partitioned duchy's establishment in 1622 until the death of its last duke in 1779, "Sonderburg" was never used as part of their title although the first duke, Philip (1584-1663) was one of the sons of Duke Johan the Younger whose seat was at Sonderburg. But Huberty also says that after Johan, none of the (1st line of) Glücksburg dukes used "Schleswig" consistently in their title either, although it was implied as with the Dukes of Holstein-Gottorp. I see, I thought I once read as much in 'Grote, Stammtafeln'. I seem to have misplaced my copy of that book to my great chagrin, however. The loss of the word 'Schleswig' from the Gottorp and Glücksburg titles may be explained by the loss of the Schleswig part of the Gottorp Duchy to the Danes (Dukes of the Glückstadt part of the two Duchies) in 1721. After that "Holstein-Gottorp" was used rather than "Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp", and since the Glücksburg Duchy was a fief of Holstein-Gottorp, they may have followed that lead.
