DSM IV not only guidelines
[edit]It should be noted that the American DSM IV is not the only established system for diagnosing and defining schizophrenia and other mental disorders. The European ICD-10 are also widely used comparable guidelines with different criteria for psychological and mental disorders.
Neither system is necessarily superior and most consultant psychiatrists in the UK have a good working knowledge of both systems. It should also be noted that these are diagnostic criteria for a clinical setting and are not necessarily designed to reflect exacly the nature of mental health disorders. For example, while DSM IV clearly distinguishes between Schizophrenia and Schizophreniform disorder most experts in the field will acknowledge to large degree of aetiological and clinical overlap between these conditions and see them as lying on a spectrum rather than as isolated diseases. It would seem to me that the exact diagnostic criteria according to DSM IV and ICD-10 do not necessarily need to be detailed in an encyclopedic article. 194.176.105.147 (talk) 12:35, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
I
[edit]I am a registered medical practitioner of some 38 years experience. I have seen schizophrenia which was quite clearly substance induced, in that it followed a relapsing pattern exactly parallelling the patients' usage of illegal substances. Comments?--Anthony.bradbury 22:02, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
'The reason for adding this diagnosis is to avoid labelling people as having schizophrenia after a brief period of symptoms' Oh really?? Also deleted 'caused by organic failure', as the article also says casuse is unknown...
changing back as such. i wrote my undrgrad dissertation on 'illness' and would be surprised if this was the reason for the diagnosis. all you need is a reference friend :)
Copyright problems with diagnostic criteria
[edit]The American Psychiatric Association has not released its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders into public domain, but claims copyright. The Wikimedia Foundation has received a letter of complaint (Ticket:2010030910040817, for those with access) about the use of their diagnostic criteria in this and a number of other articles. Currently, this content is blanked pending investigation, which will last approximately one week. Please feel free to provide input at the copyright problems board listing during that time. Individuals with access to the books would be particularly welcome in helping to conduct the investigation. Assistance developing a plan to prevent misuse of the APA's material on Wikipedia projects would also be welcome. Thank you. Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:46, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
Schizophreniform Disorder Leading to Schizophrenia
[edit]I would like to make an addition to the prognosis section of the Schizophreniform Disorder page. I would like to add that the majority of people diagnosed with Schizophreniform Disorder eventually receive a diagnosis for Schizophrenia. This information comes from my textbook Abnormal Psychology by Susan Nolen-Hoeksema so the source is reliable. What do you guys think of me making this addition?
