An american professor who led an illegal climbing attempt on the north side of Mt. Everest in 1962, crossing the border from Nepal to Tibet, having a permit for an attempt on a Nepal border mountain of 7000m++, but crossing the border, then following down the west rongpu glacier, down the main rongpu glacier and climbing up in the classical eastern rongpu glacier valley to reach the famous north col, the main saddle from where the english expeditions in 1922, 1924 (Mallory & Irvine), 1933 etc. started & the first proven successful climb of the Tibet & chinese in 1960 & 1975.

Sayre & his three mates (a scool friend, a young american and a young man from switzerland) took the same route as Hillary took when exploring the Everest region in 1952, one year before his successful attempt, also crossing the tibetian border illegally.
