Alternate name?
[edit]This tourism info site says that the high point of the Saur Range is "Mt. Muztau (Icy Mountain)" at 3,819 m. Is this just an alternate name for Sauyr Zhotasy? (It's certainly a very generic name.) Or are they distinct peaks? Any further info would be appreciated. -- Spireguy 17:33, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
No, this is a peak further to the east, entirely within China. The confusion arises because of inaccurate mapping. Of course if both heights are correct, Zhotasy is higher at 3,840m. As the peak is probably unclimbed, no perfectly accurate estimate of it's height can be made. The Soviet mapping, old and inaccurate as it is, not only gets the height wrong but suggests there is an icesheet at the summit, despite listing a lower elevation. Additionally the contour lines appear little better than guesses. For more info, see www.poehali.org, where these maps are in the public domain. Unfortunately I am unsure where the current elevation data is from. SRTM and ASTER data appear to give the height at about 3,800m, but these are notoriously inaccurate in mountain areas. As far as I am aware the Soviet mapping is the most detailed currently produced, unless military maps exist outside of public access. Arctic hobo (talk) 20:53, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
