[edit]- The sun lay Latvia down
- There, where boundaries meet:
- The white sea, the verdant land.
- The Latvian gate-key.
- The Latvian gate-key,
- Guardian of the Daugava.
- Foreign peoples broke down the gate,
- The key fell into the sea.
- Blue-white lightning, Thunder smote,
- Taking the key from the devils.
- Latvia safe-locked life and death,
- The white sea, the verdant land.
- The sun lay Latvia down
- Along the white sea's shore,
- The winds swirled up the sands,
- What shall Latvian children drink?
- The Sun commanded God
- That he dig the Daugava
- The beasts dug, God poured in
- Life-giving water from a cloud.
- Waters of life, waters of death
- Flowed together into the Daugava.
- I dip in my finger tip
- I feel both in my soul.
- Waters of death, waters of life —
- We feel both in our soul.
- The Sun, our mother —
- The Daugava — nursemaid to our pain,
- Thunder, the devil's smiter,
- He, our father.
