I know this is from a scholarly source, but the translation is simply awful. VєсrumЬаTALK 22:51, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion/proposal

[edit]
The sun lay Latvia down
There, where boundaries meet:
The white sea, the verdant land.
The Latvian gate-key.

The Latvian gate-key,
Guardian of the Daugava.
Foreign peoples broke down the gate,
The key fell into the sea.

Blue-white lightning, Thunder smote,
Taking the key from the devils.
Latvia safe-locked life and death,
The white sea, the verdant land.

The sun lay Latvia down
Along the white sea's shore,
The winds swirled up the sands,
What shall Latvian children drink?

The Sun commanded God
That he dig the Daugava
The beasts dug, God poured in
Life-giving water from a cloud.

Waters of life, waters of death
Flowed together into the Daugava.
I dip in my finger tip
I feel both in my soul.

Waters of death, waters of life —
We feel both in our soul.

The Sun, our mother —
The Daugava — nursemaid to our pain,
Thunder, the devil's smiter,
He, our father.
