More description
[edit]I think the article would be better if it contained a longer description of what dance movements are involved in a sardana. The current description is missing many details: "a two-measure pattern danced with the arms down: (point-step-step-cross) to the right followed by (point-step-step-cross) to the left. The second tirada is called the llargs ("longs", 50 - 100 measures) and has a four-measure pattern danced with the arms up, and this may become more lively." - 91.187.64.57 (talk) 14:32, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Someone please - watch over this article
[edit]This is an article about a local dance in Catalonia. Can someone please protect these articles from ethnic ultra-nationalist psychos who want to turn everything into anti-Spain vitriol. Its literally surreal. Francoism never banned Sardanas. And no, talking about how Sardanas are a weapon defending the glorious Catalan race against the evils of immigration in this article is not cool.Miska5DT (talk) 12:31, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
- The content you removed was stating the importance of Sardana as a Catalan symbol. To explain that, it was needed to explain other facts, basically immigration and what Catalan values are and what Sardana represents for them. You can find the article written by Stanley Brandes here [1]. You can read it online for free. There is another article published in 2015 which talks about Sardana and Castellers. That article also cites Brandes. AFAIK it is not open access. You can find it here: [2]. In summary, it adds to Brandes the fact of the diminishing social importance of Sardanas among modern Catalan people, but still it preserves the symbolic value it has acquired through the years. The article repeats again the history of Sardana and that it derived from Sardana curta and Contrapàs (it does not mention the influence of opera and zarzuela, though, but cites Brandes). Now let me digress: from an anthropology point of view, it is clear that for Catalans immigration is a problem. They do not conceive "Catalanity" by birthplace but by achievement. You have to learn their custom to become Catalan, including their language of course. Massive immigration is thus a problem (and this is my opinion) maybe because immigrants tend to form groups and isolate from their new community, not learning Catalan custom. Internet is full of statements of Catalan people with words like "colonisation". You have to understand that it is not colonisation in the sense of people from other country invading and taking control of Catalonia. Even people born in Catalonia can be treated as not being Catalan. Does that offend you? It should not. Often this is used by "pro-Union" political parties and associations (really, spanish nationalists) to tag the independence movement as supremacist and racist, while one could thing is the other way around. - Also, if you read carefully, you will find that Sardanas were banned. But only in locales in and around Barcelona, not in all Catalonia. In a brief period of the 1940s. I have not been talking about race neither, but ethnics, which is orthogonal to race. Filiprino (talk) 14:51, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

Tenora and Tible
[edit]The article refers to these as different instruments ("two of each") and yet the links both go to the same description of a shawm. Could someone with the appropriate knowledge please rectify this? 81.174.172.67 (talk) 11:04, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
