Fly II (limted release) (2000)

I'm pretty sure it was called Fly (special edition). I held it in my arms for 5 minutes before I decided not to buy it. I really don't think there was number II ever on it, just a re-release with an additional CD. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.200.207.241 (talk) 20:48, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Discography

OK, we need to stop arguing over the discography. I was the one who added the comment. My reasoning for it is twofold:

  • We need some sort of discography on the page. It is an established convention. For example, the article for Mariah Carey (a FA) has a brief discography with her major works. I'm on the fence about including cast albums, but definitely her main studio recordings need to be there, in my opinion.
  • We don't need every single album she ever recorded here. That would be too long of a list.

So I restored the original version of the discography, which existed without complaint for a good deal of time and passed peer review and Good Article voting. If anyone has any concerns, please feel free to bring them up. Crystallina 02:11, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Sarah on Gregorian albums

Can someone list on which Gregorian albums/songs Sarah made guest appearances. Many thanks!

You can find that information on the SarahPedia on her official website. Some of the songs have Sarah, others have Violet (Amelia Brightman, her sister), others have different vocalists. Crystallina 19:38, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
What about their fourth album? Was she on it? Or Violet for that matter? --77.105.56.16 00:17, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
Violet's on their fourth album, on songs such as The Gift. Crystallina 05:58, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
What about Gregorian's latest album? Is Sarah on it? --77.105.26.13 03:33, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

To do

I have a couple goals for this article, and the first step is Good Article. It needs more information and I believe I have nearly exhausted the Internet, or at least the easier-to-find Internet sources. A to-do list:

  • Get information from the three DVDs she released: One Night In Eden (includes interview), La Luna (information, their text biography; Siew May has not finished the bio on the official site yet), and Harem: A Desert Fantasy (information, mainly.)
  • Somehow find more information on her vocal profile. To the level of Mariah Carey, perhaps.
  • There's a decent length interview of her in Hello Magazine; unfortunately, I was unable to obtain it. If anyone has this it would be great.

Amigos Para Siempre

Strange that there is no mention of this song, which she performed with Jose Carreras (I think) for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Gemfyre (talk) 06:43, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

It was only on her discography page and I've now added it in the 1990s section. TubularWorld (talk)

Ave Maria

Sarah Brightman sang Ave Maria on her 2006 Classics album and the music video for that song, which featured her in suggestive poses wearing close to nothing (with glitter obscuring her private parts) drew some offense, disdain and controversy, especially since Ave Maria has its roots in religion and Roman Catholics may have been offended. I thought I would just throw it out here and leave someone else to see if this is worth mentioning. Of course, the norm is not to include sensitive or controversial material on the subject, but ultimately it's up to one of the regular contributors to this page.Jedd the Jedi (talk) 04:31, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Anglican

She is an Anglican, correct? I think it should be mentioned in the article if correct. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.121.102.73 (talk) 00:41, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Actually, she used to follow Kabbalah, but lately seems to have fallen away from it. No one knows what religious beliefs she holds at present. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.62.224.175 (talk) 07:29, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

A lot of English people refer to themselves, or are referred to by others, as Anglican, when in reality they don't practice any religion. I wouldn't label anybody as Anglican unless they openly talk about their religion.Eggybacon (talk) 17:54, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Gay Icon Project

In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 20:09, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • But the article says nothing about being gay? 06:15, 25 July 2006 (UTC)06:15, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Sarah is Heterosexual. Or do you mean she is an icon in the gay community? utc 2115 6 july 07

A gay icon is an icon to gay people. Their sexuality is immaterial. 12.162.122.6 (talk) 00:28, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Best selling soprano?

The article says she has sold 26 million albums, making her the best selling soprano of all time. I think Nana Mouskouri has sold more than 10 times that many recordings (something like 350 million. If no one objects, I will modify that statement. --Little Flower Eagle (talk) 18:46, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Thats right, but Nana is not a soprano! and in fact Sarah has sold 50 million albums if we add the sales of the POTO album (24 million) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.219.57.226 (talk) 23:56, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Well, 50 million is still a long way from Nana's over 300 million. I'm not trying to say that one is better than the other, but the fact is that Nana just retired in her 70's after a very long career, and she sold over 300 millions albums in that time span. Maybe eventually Sarah will reach the same number of albums sold. Also I'm wondering why you think Nana is not a soprano. Every reference I can find about her states that she is a soprano. --Little Flower Eagle (talk) 20:35, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

I mean, Nana is a soprano, thats her type of voice, but she is not a classical artist, Sarah neither, but she is closer. Nana is in the popular music way, so instead of best selling soprano, it would be: the best selling classical artist —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.219.57.226 (talk) 03:15, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps Nana is actually a soprano, but I have found no references anywhere to her voice type at all. If you search for world's biggest selling soprano, you can find sources indicating the same person. I have included one in the references. Wikipedia's policy is that all it's information is referable, which makes the statement acceptable. If you could show me where Nana is labeled soprano, we would remove Sarah's title. --Chaos47 (talk) 07:59, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

I think we cant remove that title, Sarah was dubbed as the best selling soprano and everyone around the world knows it, she is much big than Nana (original Phantom of the Opera cast, 2 olympics performances, millionarie selling albums, giant world tours, lots of charity concerts). The info about Nana is with out doubt wrong!. Maybe a hard die fan of her invented that info. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nonodejeasi (talkcontribs) 18:52, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

26 million records

Sarah Brightman has sold 26 million records, thats it. 26 million is a lot, is almost all the population of Canada. Yes maybe it could be right to include the sales of the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack (24 million) reference:http://eliax.com/index.php?/archives/5683-Los-albumes-mas-vendidos-de-todos-los-tiempos.html

so 26+24= 50!! and if you want to include the sales of the time to say goodbye single (5 million maybe)

55 million records. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nonodejeasi (talkcontribs) 18:58, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

PoV

"Sarah has a soprano voice of an almost ethereal quality. Of current sopranos she comes closest to the mythical 'Bel Canto' ideal. Her producton seems effortless with no change of resonance from top to bottom throughout her extensive range. For sheer beauty of tone she is unsurpassed. However, her range of emotions is limited because of this very tonal perfection."

This is all point of view - the article requires cleanup and updating as well. --Marysunshine 02:28, 14 March 2006 (UTC)M

Go ahead and clean it up, then! (yes I agree with you) 62.178.193.144 20:37, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
I agree it could use some cleanup. Information on her latest three albums needs expansion, and there are some new events (Japanese re-release of Fly, etc.) to add. Crystallina 17:51, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
I cleaned up some of the gushing prose. I just wanted to ensure that others were okay with this -- I'm a very new editor, trying not to barge in! When I have more time, I'll take a look at what else needs to be done--Marysunshine 17:33, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Please can we have this article extended as it is in real need of updae and expansion. It needs to reflect Sarah's position as possibly the biggest selling female star in Europe. It also needs to reflect Sarah's albums better.

"In addition, she recently formed her own production company, Instinct Films, where her first film is in pre-production. But fans of her crystalline voice and dazzling live performances need not despair: Brightman is also at work on a new album and live concert concept to be unveiled in the near future." Orphaned references in Sarah Brightman

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Sarah Brightman's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Good afternoon. Thank you for your interest in Sarah's sales. I think we have that on common. I know the numbers for sales in the U.S., and your data is almost perfect, with the exception of that Phantom of the Opera albums are not counted as Brightman's work! They are considered Lloyd Webber's production.

Official number for Sarah Brightman ALBUM sales in the United States: 4, 728, 000

1,400,000 Timeless

873,000 La Luna

787,000 The ALW Colletion

500,000+ Eden

333,000 Harem

145,000 Symphony

154,000 A Winter Symphony

36,000 Diva: Singles Collection

DVDs are not counted as ALBUM sales. That is why there are 2 numbers when refering to Brightman sales: 26 million albums, 2 MILLION DVDs. One Night in Eden, La Luna live in Concert and Diva: The Video Collection are counted in the 2 million. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.25.140.66 (talk) 21:17, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

mmm... yeah you are right (especially in the dvd, a big mistake of mine)! maybe in the official website, taking into account the sales of the phantom... because is impossible that she sell 4 million copies with her other albums.I try to get information for understanding how she obtained 5 platinum certificacion in U.S, I think they are by HIGHLIGHTS FROM PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (LONDON CAST).but I'm not sure. On the other hand, I Think that is 180 platinum and gold certificación. I leave the list here! Greetings! and thank you for answering!

Hello 'Thedarkocean'. Sarah's official website had published altered information since it's creation in 2003. It's not Sarah's fault, but there are other people that manage the site and not always what you'll find there will be totally true. I already knew about the Argentinean sales, she is way more succesful as everyone thought there. Don't do blind eyes and deaf ears to Brightman's website. Certification numbers are, if not wrong, misunderstood. In some countries, they count Phantom' sales, and in other, they just dont. The ONLY HIGH reliable sources for Gold&Platinum awards are the music agencies for each country: Ej- U.S. RIAA; Canada CRIA; Mexico AMPROFON; Taiwan GOLD TYPHOON; Argentina CAPIF, etc. The problem is that not all of the music development agencies can offer a certifications database as others do. For example, there is not for China, Southern Asian countries and most European markets, hence the only way to know the accurate info about awards on these countries is looking almost 'under the bed' in the internet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.25.140.66 (talk) 20:54, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

Please use the surname "Brightman" when referring to her in the general course of the article. I had to clean up multiple instances where she was referred to as "Sarah" instead. Elizium23 (talk) 02:12, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Genres

I have just added Symphonic Metal to her list of genres because of the recent prominence of Fleurs du Mal and similar which have led to inevitable comparisons with Sharon den Adel, however, I recognise that this represents a very small part of her career. That got me thinking that the genre list is too short, listing Symphonic Metal as one of just 3 genres implies it's 1/3 of her work which it isn't. Quite honestly she is an unique artist and can't be conveniently dropped into any genre 'box'. Her albums from the early 00s had a definite new age feel to them but I wouldn't describe it as new age music in the conventional sense. Not sure what I'm expecting to happen here really, maybe nothing, but I do feel that listing her genres as "Classical crossover and operatic pop" is not doing justice to her flexibility and breadth as an artist.Eggybacon (talk) 09:36, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't think she ever reaches "symphonic metal" - "symphonic rock" seems much closer to what you're talking about, as that is how Within Temptation (S. Den Adel) is classified. Both genres are currently included, I'm not going to do it - but if others agree, I think we should remove "symphonic metal" and just leave it at "symphonic rock". 71.162.87.128 (talk) 21:28, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

I don't really agree with that, Within Temptation is often described as a 'symphonic metal' band, as are other bands with soprano lead singers such as Epica, who have produced a lot of music which doesn't bear much resemblence to 'heavy metal'. However I agree that classifying this type of music is difficult and I don't think we should spend too much time worrying about terminology. 'Symphonic rock' seems to get the message across. Eggybacon (talk) 13:34, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

I agree about both Within Temptation (except their first album) and Sarah Brightman: Symphonic rock at best. (Is there even any other Sarah Brightman song with "heavy" rock influences other than Fleurs du Mal? Even there, I found the guitars very subdued and not at all as obvious as I had expected from the "gothic metal" remark.) But the claim that "Epica [...] have produced a lot of music which doesn't bear much [resemblance] to 'heavy metal'" strikes me as quite uninformed about both Epica and heavy metal. In fact, Epica are one of the heaviest and most 'metal' sounding bands of this type, incorporating extensive passages with thrash, (melodic) death, even occasionally black metal sounding riffs (lately also solos) and vocals in addition to prog and power metal influences; but the heavily employed symphonic aspect mitigates that aspect of their music. This eclectic mix of various extreme and melodic elements is best heard on their two most recent albums. However, it is true that "trve" metalheads often seem not to pay attention to the whole range of influences at display in their music. Sorry for the digression, but this subject is one of my pet annoyances. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 12:42, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Checking against GA criteria

In order to uphold the quality of Wikipedia:Good articles, all articles listed as Good articles are being reviewed against the GA criteria as part of the GA project quality task force. While all the hard work that has gone into this article is appreciated, unfortunately, as of August 3, 2009, this article fails to satisfy the criteria, as detailed below. For that reason, the article has been delisted from WP:GA. However, if improvements are made bringing the article up to standards, the article may be nominated at WP:GAN. If you feel this decision has been made in error, you may seek remediation at WP:GAR.

  1. It is reasonably well written.

Personal Life

The personal life section is a bit convoluted. It says that she married Andrew Lloyd-Webber in 1984 but not when they divorced. Technically it only implies the fact that they divorced. It also states that she had an ectopic pregnancy and two miscarriages with "Peterson" but says nothing about their personal relationship through the rest of it is never mentioned (and "Peterson's" full name isn't given in the personal life, so the reference could be to someone other than Frank Peterson). Does anyone have more (or better) information on this so as to clean it up a bit? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Psunshine87 (talkcontribs) 21:23, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Are you aware that this is Wikipedia not Daily mail? Personally, I strongly believe such things should be left OUT of WP articles. I don't care if Brightman had a miscarriage (or two). That's none of my business and neither it is yours. Nomad (talk) 14:26, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

I have removed the sentence with particulars about her pregnancies, as it really isn't relevant to her career or suitable for a biography here. We should attempt to find a reliable secondary source that reports her divorce date from Lloyd-Webber. Elizium23 (talk) 03:04, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Highest/lowest recorded notes

To my knowledge, and I've heard almost everything Sarah has recorded, her highest note was in PotO. The highest note in How Can Heaven Love Me was a D above high C, not an F.

I haven't confirmed the lowest note yet, but I'm almost certain that wasn't what the general consensus was. Crystallina 23:42, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

I saw the article said she can only hit E above high C, and I'm absolutely positive that's a mistake. She's at least an octave above that -- that would be E above C above high C. If it is an E; I thought the original key of "Think of Me" had her going up to F#.

High C is defined here as the C two octaves above Middle C; the E above this is the Phantom of the Opera note. Think of Me is sung in two different keys that I have heard; one has a B flat as the highest note, one has high C as the highest note. Crystallina 04:26, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

The "scream" note in Phantom is an E natural. The note at the end of the run in Think of me (in the recorded key) is a B flat.

The scream is usually "faked" by another (prerecorded) singer in performances, since the E above high C is so far away from the required voice range for Christine. Are we really sure it's Ms Brightman singing that particular E? -- megA (talk) 20:24, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Sarah Brightman was the original singer of Phantom and the song was written for her vocal range to display her highest and lowest notes at the time. Notes sung in Broadway, West End and the movie performances may have been faked, but Sarah's is genuine.Chaos47 (talk) 04:26, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Also, please see my note under "Vocal Range" on this subject. Altobasso (talk) 05:39, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Vocal range

There seems to be some confusion with Sarah's vocal range: one source says that it is E natural above high C [7] and the other says that she can reach F above soprano C.[8] Does anyone have a third source that might confirm one of these.Copana2002 (talk) 23:50, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

What is her voice type exactly? To me she sounds like lyric soubrette - cause shes got a crystel and soft and vibratiovoice (all signs for lyric)voice and a very small voice too with sweet light timbre ( typical for soubrette9 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.218.205.229 (talk) 12:43, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

There is another issue with Ms. Brightman's vocal range. Though the statement that Ms. Brightman "has a five-octave vocal range" cites the source of a "Tour Profile" (I assume this is like an artist bio in a program), the logistics makes this a virtual impossibility. The article states, as noted in the above comments, that Ms. Brightman sings up to F6 (F above high-C or two octaves and a fourth above middle-C), this would then require that she sing down to the lowest F on the piano [F1 - a full octave below a low bass's F (F2)] in order to have a "5-octave range" - highly unlikely. Just as impossible, to have a 4-octave range, she would have to sing down to the low bass F (bottom of the bass staff) - quite doubtful. A more rational probability is a 3-octave range, singing down to the low alto F, a fifth below middle-C; most female pop singers can produce at least a soft version of this note. Some confusion can come from mistaking the ability to sing a certain number of octaves of a note, e.g. four(4) Fs - F3, F4, F5, and F6, as denoting the vocal "range" of 4 octaves, but this is wrong. A vocal range is the SPAN of octaves Encompassed by the voice, so four Fs Spans only 3 octaves (which is plenty impressive on its own, in my opinion as a professional opera singer and voice teacher). In this case, the author cannot be blamed for quoting misinformation given in a promotional source, but it might be a better practice to vet information from a certain discipline unfamiliar to the author with authorities in that discipline. Had the author talked to a classically trained singer, the improbablity of the stated vocal range would have been immediately recognized. François Guay (talk) 13:50, 15 May 2015 (UTC) WHAT THEN? I intervened on Brightman's article because of my interest in private spaceflight participation. Now that she forfitted her trip in the middle of her training, I do not have enough experience with Wikipedia to know what is appropriate in those circomstances. Should all reference to a space trip be suppressed? I don't recommend this because her mere interest for spaceflight participation, her training so far and the collaboration she elicited in various organization towards her prospective mission are all worth being noted!
