[edit]Per WP:CITE, it is important to understand the difference between a "External links" section, and a "References" section. "External links" is like "Further reading". Its not critical to the article, and is just there for extra information. Often its for non-independent sources of information, or sites that are simply of interest. If a link "goes dead", it may be removed from "External links", without much consideration. It's "no big deal" to remove a link from "External links". The article is not dependent on them. The "References" section is the source where information is gathered from. Reliable sources are mandatory for all information in an article, and its compulsory to say where information is obtained from. No fact should be entered into the article, unless its backed up with references. A link should never be removed from "References" as long as facts based on it remain in the article. Even if the link goes dead, it should be preserved, with efforts to re-find it, or replace it. Sadly, many articles don't have a "References" section, but all are supposed to. --Rob 23:44, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
- I think of References and External links at the same IMHO, unless it's footnotes, those belong in a References section. Ardenn 23:47, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
