I intend to add more 'flesh to the bones' of this article in the next few weeks/months as I assist (Dec 2016) a relative of Sándor Elès to compile a biography of his life, concentrating particularly on Sándor's years in Britain following his flight to the UK in 1956 to escape the Hungarian Uprising. Sándor was of course well known in Britain from his many appearances on UK TV in the 1960s, but remains largely unrecognised in his native Hungary.Humboles (talk) 02:18, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Elès, not Éles?
[edit]I'm Hungarian and I find it hard to believe his name was Elès and not Éles. Hungarian doesn't even know "è", while Éles is a typical Hungarian family name. Why would he use "è"? What language, what ethnicity would the name Elès originate from? Is there a direct source for his name or only databases that automatically copy paste names from each other? 188.142.243.18 (talk) 05:10, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- I'm not Hungarian, but I'm familiar enough with the language to have the same thought. I think what happened is that when Sándor Éles worked in Britain, he was regularly credited simply as Sandor Eles (no accents), but when any accents were included, not only was the wrong accent was used, it was put in the wrong place, due to British ignorance of the Hungarian language. As a result, he is most famously known in Britain simply as "Sandor Eles" or "Sandor Elès", even though his correct name is Sándor Éles. This poses the difficult question of whether the page should be renamed to his real name (Sándor Éles), or whether it should remain the name he was most famously known by in Britain.
