Sabrina
[edit]What exactly is meant by "the Nickelodeon television show Sabrina The Teenage Witch"?
- Sabrina The Teenage Witch (comic book)?
- Sabrina: The Animated Series (UPN)?
- Sabrina's Secret Life (syndicated)?
- Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (TV series) (ABC/WB)?

Sandman (Spider-Man)
[edit]I don't think he should be mentioned in this article as his power are completely unrelated. He controls sand; he doesn't use it to put people to sleep. Currently the only mention is in the Depictions in film and television, which I'm going to remove after posting this. --Bobby D. DS. 22:19, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

What about the Beach Boys?
[edit]For most people, the beach boys song is the only encounter with the tale of sandman nowadays. they should at least be mentioned. and credit shouldn't be given away carlessly to The Chordettes or whatever other mid-range cover band. Michelle Tadmor

COMPLETE REWRITE NEEDED
[edit]This "article" is nothing more than a list of trivia, and a placeholder for commercial works loosely based on a sandman theme -- a LONG list of spam essentially. Most especially from the record industry -- the primary source of most spam on Wikiality. The recording industry is very much an industry -- and an evil one at that. Pasting links to their products is just as much spam as pasting links to washing powder or viagra.
There's almost no background in to the origin of the stories or it's place in society. The references are wholly inadequate.
A very, very poor quality "article". It needs completely scrapped and rewritten from scratch -- minus the spam.
Myth or fact?
[edit]The Sandemanians or Glassites were a religious party expelled from the Church of Scotland for maintaining that national churches, being “kingdoms of this world,” are unlawful. The name 'Glassites' originates from John Glass, the founder (1728), and they were also called Sandemanians from Robert Sandeman, who published a series of letters on the subject in 1755.Cite error: There are <ref>

I'm not sure whether this association has been suggested by anyone, but it seems obvious - parents warning children who remained awake after saying their prayers, of the 'Sandemanian heresy', in the form of its chief heretic blinding their eyes to the truth. It parallels the slightly later 'disobedient child scaring tactic' during the threatened Napoleonic invasion of England, "Old Boney [Bonaparte] will get you", which inspired a fear among children that malicious skeletons lurked in their bedrooms. With perhaps a link between 'dustman', 'sand', and '[powdered] glass'.
E.T.A. Hoffmann's story 'Der Sandmann', 1816, would appear to have been inspired by English sources, since the German for 'dust' is 'staub'. And it is doubtful whether the 'Dustman' notion has an independent origin (children rubbing their eyes at bedtime, as if dust or sand was in them; parents observing this and saying either "the dustman has arrived" or "the sandman is about"

Proposal to split off In popular culture sections
[edit]The entire In popular culture section should be split off into a separate list article entitled The Sandman in popular culture. Any opposition to this? -- Ϫ 12:22, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
Bold Rewrite
[edit]Can't think how I came across this article but I did and it was in need of much care. It has degenerated to a list, a list of anything that at any time made even a passing reference to The Sandman. In fact, some of the things were mentioned multiple times. I, admittedly, have gutted this article but it was in need of gutting.
The criteria I applied:
- This character is centuries old, he's been mentioned in or inspired a lot of stuff, we need not list ALL of that stuff.
- Only works where The Sandman is the central or a prominent figure are noted.
- If it doesn't have its own Wikipedia article, it's probably not notable (i.e. an externally linked film and music).
I would like to see much more development on this article of the folklore character itself but it appears that's going to require some outside reading as I couldn't find any readily available secondary sources to bring in to the article. I would encourage that. --WGFinley (talk) 18:36, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
- That was quite a drastic gutting. And yet the "In popular culture" section still remains, with the potential to once again grow into an unmanageable size. Don't you think a much better alternative would have been to split off all that content into its own separate List article? That way we'd still retain and preserve all that informative content, and it would draw away all the trivia buffs and wouldn't be such a cruft-magnet. What do you think about restoring all that stuff you removed but moving it into a separate article instead? -- Ϫ 06:54, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
- I would rather not see it back the vast majority was not notable. It could probably be expanded to get rid of that section and add details to how the myth influenced what's on the list. --WGFinley (talk) 00:04, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
- But I wasn't saying bring it back in this article.. see my proposal in the post above.. meaning it would still be gone from this article, but not gone comepletely from Wikipedia.. -- Ϫ 20:22, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
- I think that there should be a The Sandman in popular culture article, if only to keep the section from growing back. The question is: should the previous list be copy-pasted in hope that it'll be cleaned up or should it be grown back bit by bit?
- See Wikipedia:"In popular culture" content for guidelines --Jules.LT (talk) 17:14, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
- I have just tidied - a little more, but little more - some of the wording in the Television section: the narration of the French television series "smelled French", so was needful. The "Dr Who" portion is, to my mind, written by an avid fan of the series. They're also Wikipedia customers.
- I am here because of hearing again the Chordettes singing on my musicplayer. It will often be that answering the query "Who, then, is the Sandman?" will be the spur to consulting this page. I feel, therefore, that it is erring on the disingenuous to separate the myth from its expression: the fiction from the fact, as it were. Were the length of the piece dealing only with the myth itself to run far longer, splitting the two aspects would bear some merit. As it stands, and until such research is done, it remains "adequate" in my view. Jeepvee (talk) 21:35, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
Trivia section
[edit]I'm not following the rationale for this edit [1]. I don't object or agree with it yet, but I certainly don't understand. -- ke4roh (talk) 17:49, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- I was trying to resolve the concern about this article being too pop-culture heavy by cutting the list down to the most notable and relevant examples. The less notable ones should be included in an "Sandman in popular culture article", as discussed above, or omitted entirely. Nikkimaria (talk) 19:40, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

The ninth episode of the ninth season of Doctor Who, called "Sleep No More", is evolved in a scientist that manufactures Sandmen.

[edit]Having found this page before,I wentback and searched for "The Sandman". But I was sent back here again :-(
I suggest that "The Sandman" should redirect to the eponynous article. Jalanb (talk) 19:19, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- Sounds more like a bug in Search than for this page in particular.
- Whither might I re-direct it? Jalanb (talk) 19:21, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
