Photo is not of Samuel Stephens

[edit]
The photo - now confirmed to be John Stephens.

The photo used in this article is NOT Samuel STEPHENS, but his brother John STEPHENS (Colonial Newspaper Editor and Owner). They are my ancestors. The picture used for this is part of the State Library of South Australia collections.

P.P.S. Of which newspaper was John "Colonial Newspaper Editor and Owner"? Pdfpdf (talk) 14:41, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Answer: South Australian Register and The Observer
a) Stephens' own paper The Observer, which he founded in 1843, had printed by George Dehane and directed at regional South Australia, was published concurrently.
b) 1845 Register purchased in June by John Stephens, who had acted as editor for some months several years previously.

Reply from State Library of South Australia

[edit]

This image has been in the South Australian Company collection of directors, managers and other company officials since it was compiled ca. 1930. We have another set of 31 images of these people (at B 7334) which has 7 less than the BRG 42/122 set, including no portrait for "J. Stephens", which should read "S. Stephens". Obviously there has been a mistake made here and I will investigate this. The accession record for the identical image "J. Stephens" B 5942 has recorded that the original was formerly in the "Register" office till 1931. This definitely confirms this is John Stephens.
