There was another Samuel Phelps, majority owner of the London based soap company Phelps & Co. (along with Richard Troward and Warren Hastings) around the early 1800s. I don't know much more about the company, but Phelps is probably most historicly renouned for having, along with Jorgen Jorgensen staged a coup d'etat in Iceland in the year 1809.
