Virginia Project Assessment

[edit]

Article has substantial information but lacks in a number of areas, including better inline citations, editorial and organizational. Importance is ranked as "mid" for Virginia purposes. VirginiaProp 21:07, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Assigned as commander when?

[edit]

If Armstrong was assigned as commander of the 8th U.S.C.T. to replace its first commander, Col Fribley, then it wasn't because Fribley was disabled, it was because Fribley was dead. Fribley was killed at the 8th's first battle, the Battle of Olustee, in northcentral Florida.

More work needed

[edit]

I began this article's cleanup yesterday while trying to update a problematic laptop at a local library. I continued this morning on another laptop, noticing that soon after I posted significant changes to this article, I received an anonymous harassing phone call, nominally from Virginia. Although that other laptop also failed to complete an update three times last night, this laptop is at least getting appropriate antivirus updates at this cafe, so I need to address other issues now. I'm writing because I don't know when or if I'll return to this article. I started trying to at least address rise-in-ranks dating problems in the military section, which doesn't even say which unit Armstrong commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg (nor does that article link to this). The educator section remains a mess, IMHO, and I don't have access to the Eng book, only the condensed Encyclopedia of Virginia article (and as I said, limited time). My shortcuts yesterday afternoon via ancestry.com proved ineffective since the name's common and I couldn't even confirm his marriage dates. I woke up this morning wondering whether Armstrong or any of his siblings had married native Hawai'ians, and probably got carried away after correcting a disambiguation link at breakfast. I do know that Hawai'i's crown prince was treated with disrespect in the American South (and Virginia) either just before or after the American Civil War.Jweaver28 (talk) 16:49, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your final ramble of thoughts, the Armstrong family did not marry Native Hawaiians during Samuel C. Armstrong's generation. Almost none of the missionary families married Hawaiians (at least in the 19th century) with the exception of Rufus Anderson Lyman (son of David Belden Lyman) who married a Chinese-Hawaiian. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 20:30, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
