"recognize" in intro
[edit]"Currently Rhode Island is the only state in New England which does not recognize same-sex marriage" Is this right? Aren't same-sex marriages from other states, or at least Massachusetts, legally recognized by virtue of the RI Attorney General's perogative? jrun (talk) 08:34, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
- yes, you are correct. I think the AG's actions merely stated that RI did not prohibit same-sex marriage, so that made it valid for a RI couple to wed in Massachusetts because of Massachusett's former law. I don't think that it explicitly made the state recognize it, however, though it seems like that would be a rational conclusion IMO. 98.168.192.162 (talk) 04:59, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- I found articles stating that Rhode Island DOES recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages.

Name
[edit]Following news (cited in the article) explaining that same-sex marriage was rejected for 2011 and civil unions were recently passed by the RI House as a compromise, I moved the article to "Recognition of same-sex unions in Rhode Island" to reflect that it has as its subject three different recognition mechanisms. Once/if same-sex marriage is legalized, the article should be moved back to the previous "Same-sex marriage in Rhode Island", but right now the scope is not on marriage. - Now that Rhode Island recognizes out of state same-sex marriages, I have moved the article back to its previous location. Rreagan007 (talk) 18:04, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
- Since the out-of-state marriages were added to the lead, I transferred the citation there and removed the section. Me-123567-Me (talk) 18:50, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
July 1, 2011
[edit]It already is July 1 and the governor hasn't signed the bill yet, can somebody clarify the situation and when the bill is supposed to enter into force. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ecad93 (talk • contribs) 08:49, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- When the governor has not signed the bill it can't be in force yet. If he signs it, civil unions will likely become legal from the date on that he signs it. Hawaii had a similar issue with HB 444, which, if it had been signed, would have had a starting date in the past. However, from what I read in the The Honolulu Advertiser at the time, legal experts didn't see a problem. Hekerui (talk) 09:00, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Merge into Rhode Island
[edit]Is this article important enough to have its own page? I recommend this is merged into Rhode Island due to its relation and low importance as an independent article. Tsuser (talk) 19:22, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
