Add francophone community to critism?

[edit]

I'm shocked that the francophone response to Sam Katz demolishing a historically significant centre for francophone culture in saint boniface, as well as siding against employment of bilinguals in the esplanade riel(which sparked so much criticism there was a protest)

yes i may be biased here, but i think a protest is more significant then comments of disagreement —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ghyslyn (talkcontribs) 16:25, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV?

[edit]

There's been a {{pov}} tag on this article since October 23, 2006, however, there doesn't seem to be a reason why (in fact, said edit was "removal of POV material" per the edit summary.) And, there's no discussion on the talk page, as should be before a {{pov}} tag goes up (as it says so in the box itself). If there's no objections, and if I remember (I don't have this page on my watchlist), I'll remove the tag soon. --Canuckguy 13:36, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds okay. I'm just running through this now to reference everything and Wikify the article. If I notice anything POV-ish, I'll try to fix that also. Sancho 00:24, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Neutrality of new section on mayoral actions

[edit]

The new section is definitely slanted towards a positive view of the mayor. Most statements are sourced (although some are copyright violations as they take sentences straight from the sources), but some have little additions included that slant the view. An example:

A significant portion of Katz's political platform was the safety of citizens. Although controversial, Katz welcomed a by-law enacted in 2005 to restrict aggressive panhandling. [31] He also committed to alternative options for at-risk youth including participation in sports and activities in community centres as a preventative measure. [32] In 2007, Katz appointed Winnipeg Chief of Police, Chief Keith McCaskill, to improve public safety and reduce crime.

  • "A significant portion..." isn't sourced. That's original research, and an attempt to summarize what follows in a positive statement.
  • "Katz appointed Winnipeg Chief of Police, Chief Keith McCaskill, to improve public safety and reduce crime". The first part (the fact that he made the appointment) is found in the source. His motivation (to improve public safety and reduce crime), is an addition by the Wikipedia contributor that isn't sourced and an attempt add a positive slant to the article.

I'll be going through this article, removing copyright violations and these little unsourced summaries and additions. Sancho 19:56, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This still hasn't been completed. I'm going to work on it. Spiculalinguae (talk) 13:01, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Soccer Accident

[edit]

I'm not trying to say anything bad about Katz, but the mishap with kicking the boy in the head at a soccer tourney seems like a pretty prominent thing that received international press. Seems like a big omission not to include that in his Wiki page. JettaMann (talk) 20:20, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Update - 2010/2011

[edit]

This page is #1 on a list of several Winnipeg-related edits I'm hoping to make in the next few weeks to add some details and correct errors where I can. But I should raise a potential issue in this case. As both a former advisor to the Mayor and a current MSM critic of his policies, I might be better placed to give a neutral update to this page than most, but that means I have potential conflicts in both directions. So I thought I'd post this as a trial balloon before I do anything.

To make the page accurate, it needs dramatic changes; the contents reflect a sort of a random buffet selection from the last seven years rather than a summary of major points of achievement or controversy.

Specific concerns include:

1. Several sections in the Mayor's personal and mayoral biography are obsolete and need a simple update (e.g. Goldeyes playing in wrong league, police advisory board disbanded, refers to "pledges" of action where action actually took place, missing specifics that can be addressed by adding a single word to sentences, etc.).

2. The summary of what's happened under his mayoralty is bizarre from the perspective of supporters and critics alike. For example, references to fiscal policies are breezed over or broken up, despite ample specific source material on both. His critics won't find any reference to the controversy over the stadium deal or staffing issues which have dominated alt-media and MSM criticism of his terms. It talks about the Charleswood Bridge - a P3 from 1995 - when the Mayor has already seen one complete on his watch and has others underway that aren't specified. Critics and fans alike won't see anything on the police helicopter or promises to increase police deployments to attack Winnipeg's crime rate. In some cases, the article refers to "Katz" when he's not the legal or actual source of the actions described. And who cares whether "he" changed the budget six days before tabling it? In the context of the last seven years, that's totally obscure.

I'll happily take a crack at it, but only with a heads-up to both 'sides' first.

removing POV tag with no active discussion per Template:POV

[edit]

I've removed an old neutrality tag from this page that appears to have no active discussion per the instructions at Template:POV:

This template is not meant to be a permanent resident on any article. Remove this template whenever:
  1. There is consensus on the talkpage or the NPOV Noticeboard that the issue has been resolved
  2. It is not clear what the neutrality issue is, and no satisfactory explanation has been given
  3. In the absence of any discussion, or if the discussion has become dormant.

Since there's no evidence of ongoing discussion, I'm removing the tag for now. If discussion is continuing and I've failed to see it, however, please feel free to restore the template and continue to address the issues. Thanks to everybody working on this one! -- Khazar2 (talk) 14:40, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Name pronunciation

[edit]

Can we add an IPA guide to his name? It is pronounced /keits/ "KAYTSS", rather than /kæts/ "CATS". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.164.134.243 (talk) 15:50, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Change “Katz was born in Rehovot, Israel. He **emigrated to** Winnipeg in November 1951 as an infant with his parents, Chaim and Zena Katz, and his older brother, David, and was raised in North Winnipeg.[2]” to “Katz was born in Rehovot, Israel. He **immigrated to** OR **emigrated from Rehovot, to Winnipeg** in November 1951 as an infant with his parents, Chaim and Zena Katz, and his older brother, David, and was raised in North Winnipeg.[2]”

{An immigrant is a person who has immigrated—“moved TO another country, usually for permanent residence.” Note the past tense in the definition: a person is not considered an immigrant until they have settled in the new place.

An emigrant, on the other hand, is “someone who leaves FROM a country or region.” A person is considered an emigrant as soon as they leave with the intention to leave permanently (and not just to travel, for example).} 2604:3D09:A27F:3E00:A4E8:5AC5:680B:1767 (talk) 14:19, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: sentence is correct as written. Immigrate is used when a person is said to be arriving *from* a different country to settle, emigrate is used when a person is said to be going *to* a different country to settle.
