First Penny Barrier
I'm not sure if any wikipedia article mentions something to this effect, but something about the first penny barrier (or first penny problem) should be mentioned somewhere. Not sure where an appropriate location would be.
Here are some references
"The First Penny Problem. This is a constantly overlooked maxim by marketers – that the biggest hurdle to getting a customer is getting that first penny. "
http://www.shakethetree.com/2009/06/the-first-penny-problem/
"The concept isn’t new, but it was first named by Seth Dotterer on his blog Shake The Tree. It is called the “First Penny Problem,” and it concerns the hurdles any marketer, company or salesman must overcome to entice a potential customer into making his first purchase, spending his first “penny.
...
The hurdles to payment are many, and fall into three basic categories: trust, value, and logistics. First, a customer is unlikely to buy something from someone or a company that he doesn’t trust. ..."
For example, if you are only spending a penny on something but you must disclose your personal information, the 'cost' (or negative utility) associated with such disclosure maybe worth more than a penny to you.
Even if you go to retail store, you still must be carrying change on you to spend a penny on something and many people may not want to either carry change or break an entire bill, so the negative utility associated with this is worth more than a penny to them. The value of that which they buy must be greater than its monetary cost + its additional non-monetary costs (ie: disclosure of sensitive information and the risks of identity theft or whatever).
Additionally
"First, the consumer trawls around the Internet to see what other news sources are reporting for free. Second, the consumer compares prices. If he has mentally agreed to pay for news, who gets it to him most cheaply? Third, let’s say it even gets to where the customer is about to hit that subscribe button, but then he has to find his credit card, or set up a PayPal account . . . where’s the wallet? The heck with it. He signs off. You lost him."

Sales classification and template
There is a discussion as to the idea of a sales template and the classification of sales. --Andrewaskew (talk) 01:30, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
