[edit]If there is no further discussion today, I am removing the prod because sources posted IN THE ORIGINAL EDIT established this as a notable sandwich. It appears that prod logic is "I have not heard of it, therefore it is not notable." In Richmond, the Sailor is as ubiquitous as the Primanti Brothers sandwich is in Pittsburgh, and mention in Patricia Cornwall novels and Guy Fieri Cookbook only makes it all the more notable. Below are some more articles establishing notability. Peace MPS (talk) 17:37, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- RTD 2010 -- [1] sailors are nearly ubiquitous in Richmond and surrounding areas. So locally familiar is the sailor—and so dear to our collective palate—that even the British-style menu of Penny Lane Pub includes an "English sailor sandwich"
- Style 2014 -- [2] "Richmond aspires to be a much bigger town than it is, and food and drink culture has a lot to do with what a city is known for. I am hoping we can move away from having shrimp and grits, crab cakes and a sailor sandwich on every menu. Comfort staples are great, but one of the things we've been so involved with is driving a lot of healthy concepts," with sustainable foods and nutritional awareness the big touchstones.
- Style 2014 -- [3] Inspired by Perly's original 1930s incarnation as a Jewish deli, the place offers latkes, house-made gefilte fish, sailor sandwiches and other Jewish cuisine,
- Style 2011 -- [4] Richmond has long been known for innovation, they say. Religious freedom was invented here, and electric trolleys. Don't forget Gwar. And the sailor sandwich. We have the nation's best graduate school for advertising and one of the best advertising agencies, the Martin Agency. We've got neat architecture, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and lots of tattoos.
- Richmond Magazine [5] "The Sailor Sandwich at Chiocca’s -- People may argue over which establishment serves the best sailor sandwich in Richmond, but Chiocca’s and its dive-y atmosphere has to win. The Sailor, a pile of pastrami topped with grilled knockwurst, melted Swiss and deli mustard on rye, is a carnivore’s dream. Chiocca’s is a laconic old-school establishment that likes to take its time, but the wait is definitely worth it"
- Associated Press/Boston.com article (2005) -- http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2005/08/03/cooking_up_a_status_symbol/ Cooking up a status symbol 'Foodies' boost sales of high-end kitchens "In years past, when Jay Garner of Richmond, Va., prepared one of his family's signature meals -- the sailor sandwich, a grilled combination of pastrami, knockwurst and Swiss cheese on mustard-laden rye bread -- he could, at best, cook two in a frying pan."
- The News Virginian (2007) -- article documenting Fieri's 2007 visit to Dot's [[6]] "Indeed, the pair spent about an hour creating a sailor sandwich and the Chicken MacArthur, often making unairable jokes and laughing like old college buddies."
- 2009 Cookbook: The New Jewish Table: Modern Seasonal Recipes for Traditional Dishes By Todd Gray, Ellen Kassoff Gray [7] "Growing up in Richmond in the 50s and 60s, life was limited in the food department... My favorite was the "Sailor Sandwich" -- Grilled knockwurst with Swiss cheese on rye and and authentic kosher pickle"

THE QUESTION BEING -- IS A SAILOR SANDWICH A NOTABLE AND DISTINCT "KIND" OF SANDWICH? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MPS (talk • contribs) 20:00, 1 July 2015
Menu images
[edit]I have removed the New York Deli menu images. As they are primarily images of text, they don't say anything that the article itself doesn't say, with the added problem that people unable to view the images for technical or accessibility reasons can't read the text in the images. I get that we want to demonstrate the link to this particular deli, but that doesn't mean we need to reproduce a primary source in the article itself. Ibadibam (talk) 20:44, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
