Possible reference in culture?

[edit]

The Sim2 radio, when made to play "world" music, plays a song possibly saying, "Sanginaw"59.92.24.74 (talk) 14:38, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Government and Politics

[edit]

This section has gotten rather long. It makes sense to create a separate article. --CrazyElk 20:31, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comment

[edit]

This article reads like a news story and not an encylopedia. It should be split into separate catagories Asher196

Writing to offer the idea to include sports accolades, e.g. Saginaw Sting CIFL Champions 2008. Laconicdos (talk)Laconicdos —Preceding undated comment added 18:07, 26 April 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Rewrite

[edit]

I am going to take a crack at a rewrite here. This article in its current form can at best be described as "a lot of good ideas that does not flow together" and at worst "a rambling wreck that needs to have quite a bit jettisoned".

Once I get something together, I am going to be bold and post it. spryde | talk 15:12, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Have at it. I've been thinking about doing the same for a while, but I'm just too lazy. Asher196 (talk) 20:29, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, boredom won out over laziness today. I have done a bit of rework, splitting, and expansion. You can see where I am going with this here. I will work on this more tomorrow if I have time. Quite a few more references are needed and the existing references need to be put into the {{cite web}} format. spryde | talk 21:14, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Moved quite a bit more around, reworded the lede, and cleared some more cruft out. I think we are getting close to a good solid base to expand from. I still have a few more items to add and finish sourcing what is there. Once that is done, we should be able to move forward to get this thing moving towards GA status. spryde | talk 00:39, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite Status Update

[edit]

Ok, I think we are close. Most of the items here have at least one reference, the basic format is there (thanks BKonrad!), and I don't see anything really un-encyclopedic. I am going to take my list of notes and put a todo list on the top of this page. spryde | talk 14:34, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of Museums in Saginaw, Michigan

[edit]

Should there be a list, and should they include the following:

Museums would go into the Culture section as a separate subheading. I have not had the time to do it. Just make sure that when you add them, you place them in prose form (paragraph) instead of a list and add sources. I have the intentions of bringing this up to GA status and that is a couple of the criteria (no lists and generally sourced) but my time lately is short. FYI, Castle Museum (Saginaw) has an article already :) spryde | talk 12:49, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'll update the list of Museums in Michigan to reflect the article on Castle Museum (Saginaw). I actually wasn't intending to add these myself. This article seems to be so well developed, and have its regular contributors, and I was thinking that it would be better for them to do it. So it was more of a suggestion. than anything else. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 13:42, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Stan[reply]

I just moved to Saginaw and would like to help with this section. ThorRazz 23:51, 14 December 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by ThorRazz (talkcontribs)

Children's Zoo at Celebration Square

[edit]

Additionally, does the following site exist, and should it be noted: Children's Zoo at Celebration Square Saginaw 49 [2] There seem to be lots of other items listed there that haven't made their way into this article. Just asking. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 03:27, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Stan[reply]

Table on highways

[edit]

Whoever did the table on the highways, I wanted to note that it looks really good. Nice addition to the article, IMHO. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 13:22, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Stan[reply]

Notes

[edit]

Crime?

[edit]

The websites referenced with the data on the crime statistics do not appear to be valid reference sources. Also the Saginaw News article on the arsons for Devil's Night is no longer apart of the MLive archives. Until someone can present data from a valid source (i.e. state or federal government website) I will remove this section as there may be a possibility that some of the facts might be fudged. Smedpull (talk) 03:52, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct, the Saginaw News article is unreliable for two reasons. 1) The FBI data does not list Saginaw in its data. and 2) The FBI website cautions using its data to rank cities. As the FBI website says:

Each year when Crime in the United States is published, many entities—news media, tourism agencies, and other groups with an interest in crime in our Nation—use reported figures to compile rankings of cities and counties. These rankings, however, are merely a quick choice made by the data user; they provide no insight into the many variables that mold the crime in a particular town, city, county, state, region, or other jurisdiction. Consequently, these rankings lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that often create misleading perceptions adversely affecting cities and counties, along with their residents.

This is exactly the error made by Gus Burns in his Saginaw News article, and thus it doesn't pass as a reliable source, per WP:Reliable (and the FBI!). Green Cardamom (talk) 19:20, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This Wikipedia article was mentioned in the Saginaw News. Ironically given discussion above, Gus Burns continues to rank cities by crime rates despite the warning by the FBI not to do so. Someone needs to reign this guy in, he's actually causing a lot of harm out there. Green Cardamom (talk) 04:44, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Updated Population

[edit]

I have updated the population for the city of Saginaw as the U.S. Census Bureau has released 2008 figures for cities. It appears the city has declined about another 1,000 people over the year according to their estimates. Mrhercli89 (talk) 21:16, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reversion re Saginaw, Michigan talk

[edit]

FWIW, I have no recollection of doing this. I can't explain it, other than I may have clicked on the wrong line. Sorry for the confusion. 7&6=thirteen () 00:15, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

How is the name of the city pronounced? I see the information was there before, but it was deleted. Was it wrong? 68.6.90.245 (talk) 21:35, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • It wasn't me, but I'm guessing it was deleted because it was completely unnecessary. hsxeric (talk) 17:13, 25 January 2013 (EST)
    • Maybe unnecessary if you're from there or (like me) you were a fan of the Lefty Frizzell song. But I can see how it wouldn't necessarily be obvious to everyone that that's a hard "g" in front of the "i". As far as I know, the accepted pronunciation is "SAG-uh-naw" (or maybe "SAG-ih-naw"). If anyone who's comfortable with IPA transcription wants to take a shot, I'd certainly support including a pronunciation for this one. --Arxiloxos (talk) 22:23, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted the entry because "pronounced with a hard g" doesn't conform to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Pronunciation--Asher196 (talk) 00:06, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough; it certainly did not. My IPA is a little shaky but I think /ˈsæɡ.ɪ.nɔː/ is about right; if anyone thinks refinement is in order, feel free to do so. --Arxiloxos (talk) 00:45, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
