It's a pity that the bar-room (copyright) lawyers in this site don't get themselves up to speed on real law rather than their imagined versions. There was long and detailed discussion in the chat rooms on the day (9th of March 2020) when I first wanted to upload the image here and it was generally agreed that French postcards have a 70 yr copyright and as this ship sank more than 70 years ago (!!) thus the copyright on this image has expired. Over and beyond this I repeatedly find that some of the "Thought Police" in here are making up law on the hoof. For instance someone scanning a postcard, putting it on Ebay for sale does not OWN the copyright of said postcard. Because of the hundreds of thousands of originals of the card, that would imply that anyone who had bought it back in the day owned the copyright. This is patently absurd. One cannot revive the copyright (and appropriate it) by scanning an image that is out of copyright. I ask you how many old postcards do you see Getty Images claiming as their own? Answer is none.. because they know their trade and the law, while many uninformed editors in here do not.
