E. J. Smith

[edit]

Smith was not Coptic's commander when she ran aground at Rio in 1890. See https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/e-j-smith-coptic-aground-and-rio---two-out-of-three-aint-bad-11534.html Mab819c (talk) 04:03, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

He was also not her MV commander; Henry Parsell was.Mab819c (talk) 04:45, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Mab819c - Also, the incident off Rio happened on 12 October 1889, on Mai or Mãe (not Main) Island. Clearly neither de Kerbrech nor his publisher fact-checked this section in 2009; he may well have taken it from Eaton & Haas "Falling Star: Misadventures of White Star Line Ships" (1989), which has the same errors (though maybe not the maiden voyage mistake). Does anyone have a copy of de Kerbrech's book and confirm whether this article correctly reflects what he wrote? Then we can see what best to do about this. Can we assume this is a clip of the S.S. Coptic (the White Star ship)? The time frame would be correct. The metadata from LC doesn't indicate to which line the ship belonged. I am putting this here for future reference. --FeanorStar7 (talk) 12:31, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
