EC₅₀ vs IC₅₀

I'm puzzled. After creating SR9009, Boghog adds some useful information to the article by quoting the maximum inhibitory concentration from the pubmed article. So I go into SR9011 and add the same information. But as I read the primary source article, I see the contrast of "IC₅₀" and "AGONIST". Wait. This is an agonist. Why are we measuring IC₅₀ and not EC₅₀? This is not an antagonist. Yet, the primary source clearly lists an INHIBITORY CONCENTRATION and not an EFFECTIVE CONCENTRATION. I also did a double take when I read the source (PMID 23852339). An agonist is defined as a ligand that mimics the activity of the the endogenous ligand. The endogenous Rev-ErbA ligand is heme which by binding to this receptor down regulates (represses) gene expression. The data that Burris reports are from a Rev-ErbA reporter cell line that measures the repressor activity of Rev-ErbA. Hence this is an "inhibitory" effect for which IC₅₀ is an appropriate designation. Boghog (talk) 09:01, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
