Sæberht of Essex and his burial in Westminster Abbey
[edit]I have mentioned the burial of Sæberht, King of the East Saxons, in Westminster Abbey, and have provided source material for this. I have seen the tomb myself and have discussed the history of the tomb with one of the Abbey guides. The source material provided by Walter Thornbury (1878) would appear to be correct, in that King Henry III had the remains of this East Saxon king translated with his wife to Westminster Abbey when the Abbey was rebuilt.Ds1994 (talk) 15:34, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- I can't vouch for the knowledge of the Abbey guides, but a 130 year-old reference seemed a bit dated to me. I had a search myself, and every scholar who seems to discuss this in any length seems agreed that the tomb is a medieval fabrication, a bit like the discovery of King Arthur's tomb at Glastonbury Abbey. I've added a couple of references to modern textbooks. Pasicles (talk) 21:08, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
- It would be nice to have a picture of Sæberth's tomb to add to the article. There doesn't seem to be any on Wikimedia Commons at the moment, however. If anyone reading this goes to Westminster Abbey and has a camera they don't know what to make of… :) – Swa cwæð Ælfgar (talk) 07:46, 15 August 2017 (UTC)
