The Merchant's Wife
[edit]The Merchant's Wife. is not exactly how painting is called in original language (Russian). In Russian it's more like "Купчиха за чаем" -> "The She-Merchant at drinking tea". The important bit here - it's not a wife of a merchant, but she is merchant itself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Soswow (talk • contribs) 04:27, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
- Russian "купчиха" has two meanings: 1) female merchant, 2) merchant's wife. See Ushakov's dictionary. --Off-shell (talk) 05:56, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
- both wrong. In the context of this picture it means that she belongs to merchant estate, no matter is she married or in trade herself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.165.173.131 (talk) 23:08, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
