Number of marriages conflict

The number of marriages is said to be five and four, variously. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.254.139.198 (talk) 14:06, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Conflicting information on father

This entry has conflicting dates on the death and activities of Russell Means' father. It says his father died in 1967 and then later states Means and his father participated in the Alcatraz event in 1969. Someone needs to get their facts straight on this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.32.178.130 (talk) 13:08, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

I got just one likely result from a search on the Social Security Death Index for an "Harold Means" for the period 1967-1969: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VM5K-L4S. If Russell Means' father had a Social Security number, which is a near certainty since he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and worked in shipyards there, that would put his death in April 1967, and it would be impossible for father and son to have been at the Alcatraz occupation together in 1969. Can't be completely sure of the database search result, as the Social Security number was issued in Pennsylvania, but it's entirely possible that Russell Means' father could have been in Pennsylvania in the mid-1930s where he would have reached the age of majority, which was 21 then. — QuicksilverT @ 17:04, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Hi Quicksilver, I appreciate your research on this, and the prev anonymous editor who flagged this issue. The problem was stemming from a misunderstanding perpetuated in the source that was given. I added a Google books ref to explain Means going to Alcatraz with his father in 1964 to occupy it for 24 hours before he returned in 1969. His father died in January 1967. Evenrød (talk) 18:04, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Yeah the Wikipedia article had his father's name as "Harold" because the source that was being used was unreliable and didn't even list the correct name. I replaced that with the reference to Means' own autobiography. I haven't really copy-edited much of this article however. Evenrød (talk) 19:53, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Birthplace conflict

The body of the article gives Means' place of birth as Pine Ridge, South Dakota, while the Infobox and Persondata give it as Wanblee, South Dakota. The two locations are about 80 miles apart, airline distance. Which one is correct? — QuicksilverT @ 02:44, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

I couldn't find the source for Wanblee, so I put his place of birth as a location that encompasses a wider geographic area — being simply the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, because Means is not any more specific than that in his detailed autobiography.. Evenrød (talk) 23:03, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

NPOV violation

There's a serious POV party relating to Where White Men Fear to Tread - the only statement about it is an excerpt from a minority POV negative review. Coverage of the book should be balanced, or the review excerpt removed. Nwlaw63 (talk) 00:36, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Because we only have negative reviews, I removed them here. -SusanLesch (talk) 16:12, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
One thing that's still an issue is that the article still talks about the autobiography being received with negative reviews, and then supports it with references which don't exactly support that. Two of the references are criticism of Means and the book by other AIM members, which aren't really 'reviews' - it would be more accurate to put them in the AIM split section. Also, the lengthy quote is from an article whose main point is to say that Means is an extremely controversial, not to give a negative book review. I think the word controversial would be more accurate than negative to describe reviewers response to the book. Nwlaw63 (talk) 14:54, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
