Rugby's Introduction in NZ
[edit]I have read two conflicting views, one that Rugby was introduced to Nelson in 1870 by Charles John Monro, the other that it was being played in Christchurch earlier then that (1868 from memory). I don't know if the reference given for the view expressed in this article is that reliable (being a website). I'm very certain that there is at least some degree of disagreement on when the first game of rugby was played in NZ. This should probably be noted in the article, as long as there are references to back it up. Can anyone help with this? - Shudda talk 05:48, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- I think the rules were not drawn up until 1871 (off the top of my head), any games played before that may not have been very 'rugby-like'. This is one of the reasons why sometimes different dates are given e.g. for some reason the South African union consider 'Winchester football' to be a form of rugby and therefore date the introduction of rugby to South Africa to early games of Winchester rules played at Bishop's school.GordyB
- Yes, Christchurch Football Club, the oldest rugby club in NZ, played "Christchurch rules" when it was founded in 1863. The club deserves an article me thinks. Grant | Talk 02:21, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- Christchurch is the oldest football club in New Zealand, but it played several codes of football before staying with rugby. I think whats in debate is whether it could have played a match before 1870. I'm going to have to find some references eh. - Shudda talk 02:25, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Culture
[edit]Rugby has had a large impact on New Zealand's culture, self image and politics. I think that's one area the article could expand into.Mostlyharmless 06:29, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- I have added something about the rugby channel on sky tv, this could be part of a culture section-S.ferguson 09:19, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

North v. South
[edit]Something that struck me recently is how amazing a North Island v. South Island rugby game would be. I was wondering if this has ever actually occured? 210.50.99.100 (talk) 00:51, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
- There was an annual game for many years, often preceding the All Black trial game(s). I don't think there have been any since super rugby started. It's difficult to narrow down a google search, but I found one example, a trademe auction for a programme (apparently with the wrong image) [1]. dramatic (talk) 23:38, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
- And I've just checked a 1986 Almanac and found results of the Interisland game from 1897 - 1985, enough for an article on it.dramatic (talk) 23:52, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
Name Change
[edit]I was thinking that it would look better if the "u" in union was capitilised. what ya think? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.73.71.73 (talk) 09:23, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
- It is the agreed convention that rugby union is not capitalised.GordyB (talk) 11:32, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Rugby World Cup
[edit]Regarding this section it seems that a sentence needs to be changed. It says the All Blacks have not won the world cup since 1987 and then goes on to say that they won in 2011. This needs to be changed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.200.250.60 (talk) 22:07, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
There is a complete section missing on NZ Rugby style
[edit]Anyone watching rugby in NZ will notice the huge difference between how the game is played in Nz compared to anywhere else in the world. This makes NZ rugby unique and is certainly the reason why NZ has been the world leader in rugby for at least 110years. The key ingredients are-a healthy and very vigorous population. Beginning to play at an early age. Well informed intelligent coaching at all levels. Probably above all else is the athleticism and fitness of kiwis in general reflected in their unsurpassed talents in rugby. Robby Deans recently reflected on the lack of some basic skills(like passing correctly) of top level rugby players in Australia. Most rugby player in NZ have mastered passing by the time they are 12. Another factor is that rugby has always been colour blind in NZ.NZ has benefited from hugely talented players of many ethnicities for many generations-George Nepia,Mac Herewini, Jonah Lomu,Sid Going,Christian Cullen,Don Clark,Colin Meads,Chris Laidlaw,Brian Williams,Dan Carter,Ritchie McCaw,Waka Nathan to name but a handful. NZ rugby as it has been played since the 1970s is a spectacle not an endurance test. While the UK has far more player numbers, NZ has far more top quality athletic players. Anyone who has watched English kids do "games' (PE) at school, will be struck by how superior kiwi kids are at basic skills like throwing, catching, hitting etc.In a typical kiwi class of 30 kids you will get 25 who are good at sports. In an English class you will get 2.This really shows up in rugby when players sprint with the ball, sidestepping and passing in intricate patterns with incredible dexterity, far beyond abilities of UK players. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.62.226.243 (talk) 23:45, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
