What's in a name?
[edit]While it's a delightful story that the locality was named after his wife Rubyanna, John Charlton Thompson doesn't appear to have married anyone called Rubyanna. Rubyanna does appear as a place name in the South Sea Islands in 1859 (see [1]). Given that Kanakas were imported from the Pacific Islands to work on the sugarcane plantations, I am tempted to think that the name Rubyanna may be linked to the place in the islands.
