Buffs?
[edit]The only link to "Buffs" seems to come in a context that suggests that they are using it as a synonym for "aficionado." Maybe we could fix this redirect to something like "Buffs(order)" so there's no confusion and that article has a proper red link (since that article references an etymological origin and thus can't be satisfied by changing the link to "enthusiast" or "aficionado" even if those were encyclopedic rather than dictionary topics). 71.37.61.147 10:54, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
Other meaning of RAOB
[edit]My father - a publican - hosted an RAOB lodge, he told me it meant "Ragged arsed old buggers"
- Yes my grandfather was a buff and he used that quote often too. I don't think it's an official title though! -- 86.132.156.213 22:53, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
- It couldn't be...we're not all old :-) 160.84.253.241 13:27, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
My father, a Buff since forever, told me how the name was conceived: the Buffs has no warrant, when it was named it was brand new, its organisation is chaotic and utterly without order, and it has absolutely nothing to do with buffaloes. I realise my dad's description is not normative, but it is an explanation I've always liked. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.43.85.27 (talk) 09:53, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
External liks: turning into a directory
[edit]The external links section seems to be turning into a mini-directory. Much as though I would not wish to remove these good natured lodges and people from our encyclopedia, its getting a bit long/big. Could we trim it, or create a separate list article? Rgds, --Trident13 (talk) 21:17, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, it should be trimmed … done. Alexbrn 15:20, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
Radisonde
[edit]I had only heard of this as an abbreviation for Radiosonde observation. I was going to put a hatnote in, but our Radiosonde article never uses the abbreviation "raob" itself so it might be an old fashioned term from the days when computers were ruled by 8 character file names.—Soap— 16:18, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
Antediluvian
[edit]The article seems to imply that the RAOB claims its origins from ancient times (before the flood) - this is incorrect. In the initiation ceremony it is explained that our principles of brotherly love, good fellowship & benevolence date from ancient times, not the Order itself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.104.221.28 (talk) 08:16, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion. Section 'Name changes' updated. --Wire723 (talk) 15:15, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
Indignant?
[edit]By way of small fines, donations and fees, money would be raised to assist an indignant member who was in need.
Did the author mean "indigent"? 82.43.85.27 (talk) 09:37, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
