I reverted an edit that removed mention of Painter being a cab driver and which also added the following: "...later ran a successful national industrial cleaning & secuirty organisation. He was elected Chairman of his industry and made a freeman of the city of London 1984. He was initially a leading member of the Conservatives in Tottenham as a parliamentary candidate and also as a candidate for them in the Greater London Council."
To explain why, let me take various parts separately.
- "ran a successful national industrial cleaning & secuirty organisation": I do seem to recall that Painter ran a cleaning company. Whether it was successful is beyond the remit of Wikipedia. I do not recall that it was also involved in security. In any case, a reference would be required.
- "He was elected Chairman of his industry..": Which industry specifically? And a reference is also needed.
- "..made a freeman of the city of London 1984": is not a particular honour - if he was a liveryman he would have to be a Freeman, but in any case a reference would be needed.
- "..a leading member of the Conservatives in Tottenham as a parliamentary candidate...": raises the question of what precisely makes someone a leading member in a constituency, but he was never a parliamentary candidate for the Conservatives in Tottenham. [See Tottenham (UK Parliament constituency) which lists all candidates there back to its formation in 1950. Painter only listed as NF.]
- "..and also as a candidate for them in the Greater London Council": It's possible painter was a Tory GLC candidate, but a reference would be helpful. However, since GLC councillors were, I believe, elected in bloc votes by borough, it is not possible that he was a Conservative candidate for Tottenham. Emeraude (talk) 17:06, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- I think the mention of him being a big wig in the local Tory Association in Tottenham was in Fielding's book. Unfortunately I don't have access to that book since I left uni so I can't confirm it. The GLC candidature is apparently wrong however as Painter doesn't appear anywhere, for any party, in these lists. Like you I've also heard the cleaning company thing but I don't suppose it's that important that it really needs to be included (no immediate references seem to be available).
