Roy Marika is an important historical figure in Australian indigenous affairs, he is one of the Yolngu Elders who fought for land rights in Yirrkala and opposed the Bauxite mine being imposed on their land. This was the start of the land rights movement in Australia. the case of mirrlipum vs nabalco in 67 was lost but due to this is was recognised that Yolngu were the owners of the land, the mine however was still able to be installed on a special purpose lease. Roy Marika along with other Yolngu elders presented Australian parlament with a bark petition which was traditional paintings on bark that detailed the Yolngu ownership of the land as it had been passed down to them through their ancestor beings. It is important to include this in the encylopedia.
