From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rovsing's original method was intended to milk the contents of the large bowel backwards towards the caecum and appendix, rather than palpate the left iliac fossa pain as such. Where there was inflammation, distension of the caecum and appendix caused pain. It is not a reliable sign and, it most cases, it probably suggests that the inflammatory process is extending from the right iliac fossa towards the left. Wrong description of Rovsing's sign

[edit]

The wikipedia article repeats an error that has been present in medical textbooks for decades.

There is a scientific article that clarifies the matter:

Rovsing Sign Revisited—Effects of an Erroneous Translation on Medical Teaching and Research Journal of surgical education, 2014, Vol.71 (5), p.738-742 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Timur Luxemburg (talkcontribs) 15:28, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
