Sun Myung Moon reference

[edit]

The text in question... On 23 March, 2004 Congressman Barlett participated in a weird "coronation ceremony" for the Korean religious figure Sun Myung Moon. It seems that the congressman, like others in attendance had somehow been misled as to the the event's agenda.

Dear Tom- I reverted the 'coronation' but hope I can do it in a friendly way. I do not think it is trivia. (Trivia? His campaign included greeting commuters at exit ramps. That is trivia.) It seems (to me) to be of interest to people in the district and a (small) reflection on the man.

Heck, it is an interesting sidelight that adds some humanity to the guy.

I note you have an objective to improve the MD congressman articles. I humbly and politely propose that this little article helps do that.

(By the way, wouldn't an article on the Byron Dynasty be a good one to have?) Paul, in Saudi 15:45, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)

This is an entirely random comment if looking at the article as a whole. Let's reword this a bit to put it into context: "Senator Bartlett attended a church event." You can see that such a reference is very trivial as it is an insignificant point in his political career/life and is not worthy of mention. --tomf688 (talk) 23:58, Mar 13, 2005 (UTC)
I have re-inserted the information. The 2006 Newsweek article I referenced in the body of the article says that carrying the robe to Rev. Moon is what Bartlett is best known for. It should therefore be included in the article.--Gloriamarie 21:37, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Wondering why the reference to carrying a royal robe in the Sun Myung Moon ceremony has been removed from the entry completely? CharlesSearch (talk) 21:54, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
After Gloriamarie reinserted the info in June 2007, the Moon paragraph (the largest in its section) remained until late September 2008 when Redddogg trimmed what was described as "uncited, cited by dead link, or cited by blog, per WP BLP policy", or unsupported by a provided citation. Two weeks later and without comment, user William Tennent (now blocked) removed what remained of the reference.
Bartlett's and most of the thirteen other politicians' involvement with the ceremony (nearly ten years ago) seems insignificant over the course of their careers. Unless you're equally concerned about no mention in articles for most of the other politicians involved, which evenly represented both major parties per this blog, I'd think we can leave it out. —ADavidB 00:16, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

sorry Jeroen94704

[edit]

I am reverting your edit and request a cite. Sorry for being difficult, but we are having trouble with a vandal around here. Paul, in Saudi 13:05, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I assure you, that vandal is not me :). In any case, that quote came from a discussion board, so I'll try and find a better source. Jeroen 09:23, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
Thank you, sorry for being a Jerk. (The thing is, no matter how silly the quote, it is not at all unlikely Roscoe might have actually said it!) Paul, in Saudi 13:16, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I understand vandalism is annoying Jeroen 13:34, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

Election results table

[edit]

The columns "Subject" and "Party" seem quite unnecessary - the "Subject" is always "Roscoe Bartlett" (it's on article on him) and the party is always "Republican". The table would be better if these two columns were deleted, yes? John Broughton 20:14, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The table also neglects the Green Party candidate in 2004, Hemingway 144.175.19.63 23:04, 8 December 2006 (UTC)PT[reply]

C-SPAN

[edit]

It should be mentioned that he is frequently found on C-SPAN making special speeches in the House, most notably on the issue of oil with his many charts. -Amit, 03/13/07

He is on right now 5/1/07 talking about oil production and conservation, people having 10 kids makes conservation hard. Yet he brags about all his kids in the same breath of leaving behind energy resources.

Quote section

[edit]

Quote sections are to be avoided in Wikipedia articles. I moved one of the quotes into another section. Please try to move the quotes into the body of the article or remove them altogether.--Gloriamarie 21:37, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From the Frederick News Post

[edit]

- Frederick News Post - Oct 29, 2006 ...[Bartlett is] not good for the federal economy. [b]In 1996 he signed a pledge to cut the budget deficit in half or not seek re-election; since then he has sought re-election five more times while voting for the three largest budget deficits in U.S. history.[/b] He's not good for local businesses or their employees. He voted to give federal loans to companies that move offshore to escape paying taxes. Meanwhile, he also voted to deprive millions of American workers of overtime protection...

-Is this worth including? Perhaps the bolded section? Paul, in Saudi 16:10, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is this online? Who is saying it-- is the newspaper quoting someone or is it an editorial before the election? Did they endorse his opponent? Is this newspaper in his district?--Gloriamarie 07:45, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heavens yes, the Frederick News-Post is the only newspaper in Frederick, Maryland, the largest city in the district and the second-largest in the state. The quote was found at the site of oppenent in the 2006 race, Andrew Duck his site is (http://duckforcongress.com/inthenews). A romp to the News-Post site regrettably does not include the quote.
With all that, is it worth including? Paul, in Saudi 11:46, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Add Template:Peak oil

[edit]

Given Roscoe Bartlett/Archive 1's interest in the subject of Peak oil, would it be appropriate to add Peak oil to the bottom of his article? Since there are already some other navigation templates at the bottom, I thought I'd ask here to see what other users think. --Teratornis (talk) 22:50, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Political views

[edit]

Why is there almost nothing on his views in the article? Also why is there no mention of his survivalist tendencies?BenW (talk) 07:08, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

student loans unconstitutional remarks

[edit]

See the 6 September 2012 Washington Post online article about this subject. The next day Bartlett broadcast apologized for a Holocaust remark made in his re-election speech. 108.45.122.74 (talk) 09:42, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Major NPOV , WP:UNDUE, and WP:RS problems in 2012 election section

[edit]

Main issue in the election was the gerrymandered district. 1 2, which was subject to a recall vote, and condemned as naked partisan manipulation3. That issue is not really present on the page in length appropriate to its importance.

I also notice that the 3-year old finance reporting complaints, while reported, have a misattributed source; the AP source was the Baltimore Sun, not WP, and the only place you can find the incorrect link presently on WP is on liberaral/progressive attack blogs. Easy fix.

On the other hand, now that the election is over, the article is being spammed with completely WP:UNDUE and BLP-non-compliant material on an alleged "rape" controversy. Primary refs are BuzzFeed and ThinkProgress, MsBlog, which are liberal attack blogs, and can't possibly be regarded as WP:RS, at least for anything except opinions and ATTRIBUTED attacks (aka opinions). The attempt to link Bartlett to Akin was BY partisan attack sites and the Democratic Party and SuperPacs, and yet the narrative uses passive voice to imply such attacks just "appeared". The quote is not a "clarification" nor did it come out of thin air; Bartlett was being followed to town halls in the wake of the bizarre Akin statements, and the people peppering him with confrontational questions are the BuzzFeed video crew (the "transcript" includes asides between the camera guy and the other staff member, and they drown out the candidate, even though they are spoken softly). You can use the ambush interview, just have to attribute. Actual WP:RS, such as the marginally WP:RS Gazette, and the better 4 5 all say the same thing; Bartlett was among the first to distance himself from Akin, clearly does not share his views on exceptions or biology, and that IN SPITE of this, was hounded and attacked BY DEMOCRATS and progressive attack blogs as endorsing those views. He did state a fact, that as a proportion of abortions, abortions after rape pregnancy was rare event, and that is obviously factual, as rapes are rare and consensual sex is not, but to brand this as an unsourced "controversy", as opposed to a properly attributed partisan attack strategy is utterly dishonest and contrary to WP:BLP. --Anonymous209.6 (talk) 19:41, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
