Yankee Settlers?
[edit]Having grown up near Roosevelt, I find it hard to believe that 3/4 of the original inhabitants had New England, Puritan roots. This township now is predominantly Polish, with some other ethnicities mixed in. The only account of Roosevelt's history that I have seen is Arthur Latton's brief writing, which in the section on Lublin on page 214 says that the entire township was settled with Polish immigrants around 1906. The reference supporting the paragraph about New England roots leads to a non-existent page. I agree with 32.218.34.170: the paragraph should be removed until someone provides a reference to support it. --Jeff the quiet (talk) 06:19, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
- I removed the paragraph on Yankee settlement because the reference cited points to a non-existent page - almost certainly a never-existent page. The 1910 census of Roosevelt supports Latton's claim that it was settled by Polish immigrants, and doesn't square with the claim of Yankee settlement. If you care, look at the 1910 census of Taylor County, with Roosevelt on pages 196 to 207. It counts about 105 households in Roosevelt. If you look at the heads of household (husbands) and wives, and look at the year of immigration and nativities of their parents, the vast majority cannot be of Yankee origin. For example, household 1 (the Swetliks) immigrated in 1892 and 1885, so they aren't of Yankee origin. In household 39, the wife Maybelina Albinisk (or something like that) was born in Pennsylvania, but her father was Russian-Polish and her mother Ger(?)-Polish. And so on. In total, I think only two households could conceivably be of Yankee origin: Peter Stadler in household 40 and John and Rose Mielke in household 52. Even if those two households had Yankee/English/Puritan roots, and even if the census-taker made a few mistakes, and even if I made a few mistakes, we're still far, far from "roughly three out of four" having Yankee origins. The author needs to provide the source for his claim, if it exists. Jeff the quiet (talk) 22:23, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
