Earthbound Originals?
[edit]The article has the passage "Keeping the Earthbound original in a state of sensory deprivation allows him ..." in it. I don't think this is accurate. I just finished the novel and I am pretty sure that the original person is destroyed to power the machine and then two copies are simultaneously created and they share a connection due to this shared creation. This lasts for a while and is extended by the use of the deprivation chamber. But the original is most certainly destroyed. I will try to find a valid passage in the novel.
Also, the note "remember me to her" doesn't make as much sense unless the original is destroyed.
From my copy of the novel (First Equinox Printing, December, 1974) on page 101 in the paragraph beginning with "Barker lay in his suit, his arms sprawled at his sides." it continues further down, "There are going to be two of you," Hawks said. "When you're scanned, the signal describing you will be sent not only to the receiver on the Moon but to the one in the laboratory here. The signal to the laboratory receiver will be held in a tape delay deck until the duplicate signal has reached the Moon. Then both receivers will simultaneously resolve a Barker."
The original is destroyed. MikeJPalmer (talk) 07:30, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Sorry for all the edits: One more passage, page 71: Hawks is explaining the function of the machine to Barker and he says, " 'But the original Barker is gone, forever, and his atoms have been converted into the energy that drove the transmitter.' 'In other words,' Barker said, 'I'm dead.' MikeJPalmer (talk) 07:39, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Without Their Knowledge?
[edit]most having been copied without their knowledge and shanghaied.
I just finished this novel, and I don't believe this is true. I think the observors were aware of the situation. Can anyone provide a quote to support "without their knowledge"? 207.31.229.4 16:28, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
You are correct. Here's the relevant quote, courtesy of Steve Greenland at rec.arts.sf.written:
"These people here -- the Navy men, the observers -- think of them. They're the best people for their jobs. And all of them, here, know that when they came up here, counterparts of theirs stayed behind on Earth.
- [*snip*]
They all volunteered to come up here."
(From the version in the SF Hall of Fame collection, vol. IIB)
Thanks, Steve. I've corrected the plot summary. Cheers, Pete Tillman 19:33, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Without attribution, the points raised here seem to be OR, that dreaded thing ;). The reason that I bring this up is that, as was pointed out, Budrys was one of the authours of the entering wedge for the New Wave. Having the comments backed by citation(s) would strengthen the article. v/r, Drieux (talk) 01:07, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Rogue Moon 1960.jpg
[edit]Image:Rogue Moon 1960.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
