The claim that the speedbrakes had been on the upper wing is wrong. They were initially on the fuselage side and were moved to the bottom of the fuselage. The new location can clearly be seen on the photo accompanying the Flight article which is cited as a reference. But those journalists are not always right.
Sorry that I cannot give you a weblink as proof, but I was on the Team and know what I know. And the evidence of the photo should really be enough to get the wrong description corrected.
